I asked that before the flame war broke out between those two guys.

I'm guessing we won't have an answer until they can get the samples back.

            Going to be awhile

As for whether LCROSS kicked up evidence for water on the moon (the object of the exercise), the jury is still out.

It will take scientists a couple of weeks to figure out if the shadowed area of Cabeus crater holds any water ice. Visually, not much seemed to happen. Michael Bicay, the science director a NASA’s Ames Research Center said: “It’s hard to tell what we saw here.”

Re: NASA's Moon Crash Friday Morning

I sure do hope they find water/ice on the moon it would actually get us moving towards one day using the Lunar surface for resources rather then sapping the Earth dry.

BTW about "trashing" the moon? The impact is so small and the plume that went up was so insignificant that it's like a gnat's wing hitting you. So sayeth Bill Nye who was on CNN talking about this last night.

What might be easier is to do the NASA moon trash count:

LOL!! The earth is going to suddenly go dry. All this global warming stuff (ie. the gloom and doom predictions) is comical... we just wasted a bunch of money today...you want to fix health care? stop trying to blow up the moon...

I don't know if you're being sarcastic or serious but i'll just say this is supposed to find out if there's natural resources on the moon that we can use to lessen the strip mining (for all intents and purposes) the earth.

This mission is also a drop in the bucket compared to most other NASA missions anyways.

This is pretty much the combo of JFK.

Blending the Cuban missile crisis AND going to the moon!

They want to know if there is ice that could be melted into water to sustain a base on the moon.

Ice also doesn't mean that there was/is water on the moon. It could have traveled from some where else to the moon

You're being a little nitpicky as having a base would be for the express purpose of using the resources on the moon to bring back to earth so it's all the same thing no?

I grant you that the ice/water could come from other interstellar bodies but i'm sure a great deal would probably come from the moon itself after millions of years of bombardment.
