I believe a base on the moon would be for the purpose of a launching pad to Mars.

The average distance from Earth to the Moon is 384,403 km.

The distance from Earth to Mars is approx. 55 million km at its closest point.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think knocking off 0.7% of the trip is going to make much of a difference. I guess you wouldn't have any kind of size restrictions for a base, but I don't see the benefit of having a base on the moon to serve as a launching pad to Mars.

Who knows, I know thats what has been discussed on a few science channels. The base wouldn't solely be for going to Mars but scientific studies as well.

Either way, waste of money imo.

Not so much a launching pad as it is a testing ground.

            Insignificant!?

I took an astronomy class at school and my prof said that one of the main reasons for a base on the moon would be for asteroid protection. I guess maybe comets too? But he said that we wouldn't have much time to put together a plan to prevent from a backdoor comet (coming from behind the sun). I'm not sure how much time there is with comets coming from the other direction.

Below is an example of a comet's elliptical orbit, of course it's orbit could be more elongated than that.

Hard to argue with since it's a university professor. We definitely don't want to challenge their knowledge or authority.

(okay, is it me or doesn't anyone else find that statement something off the SyFy channel?)

I think the moon to mars plot is based around the idea that they can use the moon as a "setup" area to bring everything they are going to need. It all gonna fit into one shuttle, and they could use the moon base to assemble things and organize before they push off.

There's also the fact that with little to no gravity on the moon the energy exerted to launch a spacecraft to Mars would be incredibly less then the energy wasted by doing it on Earth.

Still has to be launched from earth.

Far less fuel though so it's still an advantage to do it on the moon.
