Re: Has there been a real original epic movie this decade?
I don't get the qualifications for epic or the disqualifications, either. Godfather and JP were based on books. Star Wars pulled together plots/characters/themes from various Asian films.
TDK wasn't a remake.

Reboot...remake, I think that is semantics. LOTR you could make a case for, not the Batman movies.
Gladiator was a good choice. Didn't think about that one. Matrix is definately an epic, but I think late 90's when I think Matrix."Maybe I can't win. But to beat me, he's going to have to kill me. And to kill me, he's gonna have to have the heart to stand in front of me. And to do that, he's got to be willing to die himself. I don't know if he's ready to do that."Comment

I think the Batman movies are kind of like the Bond movies, in that its not necessarily a "reboot" but a different envisioning because I think both TDK and Casino Royale belong in this "epic" category.
I would also stand behind PotC, Spiderman, 300, The Departed and Inglorious Basterds. I have a tendency to throw in There Will Be Blood because DDL's performance is truly epic and I drink your milkshake was an instant catch-phrase.

Memento might be the most underrated movie ever. I don't know if you could call it epic, but it is certainly an original masterpiece.
Christopher Nolan might be the best film maker of our time as well.Comment

The Departed is a remake of the 2002 Hong Kong movie 'Infernal Affairs'.
So that doesn't count either.http://flotn.blogspot.com

Good pick. Even if that movie isn't your cup of tea it would still be epic on an objective basis in a subjective medium. The structure and pacing and originality makes it automatic. If someone told you before hand they would make such a movie, and an excellent one at that you would think they were smoking something yet Nolan pulled it off brilliantly. I still watch it now and shake my head at how the Nolan brothers pulled it off so well. If that doesn't qualify as epic I don't know what does.Comment

There Will Be Blood
I never read the Upton Sinclair novel "Oil!" so I dunno how close it is to TWBB, but I hear it's only very loosely based.
WALL-E
Finding Nemo
Gran Torino
Inglorious Basterds
Kill Bill
Snatch
District 9
Pan's Labyrinth
In Bruges
300
Not sure if I consider any of those movies to be "epic", but they're all very good and don't seem to be based off of anything other than what was intentionally written for the use of a movie
Gladiator seems to be really the only epic movie of our time not based off of a previous book or movie, although tons of Roman gladiator movies have been made before. The Dark Knight could be considered a take off on the genre of Batman, since we've seen so many different versions of the character, and this was by far the most creative and original version of the hero. I guess it depends on how you look at the definition of original, like other posters have said, there are only 5-10 stories and they get repeated over and over throughout history.Comment

Re: Has there been a real original epic movie this decade?
Yep and i would think you would have to be brothers to know what each other are thinking to pull it off so well. Guy Peirce was also a brilliant casting choice to play the lead as I can't see any other actor who could do the job he did as kind of a lost soul who's also delusional at the same time. (there's one brief exchange between 2 characters the last time I watched it that I didn't notice any other time that gave me a whole new interpretation of the movie about Pierce's possible delusional nature that I'm sure Nolan slyly put in intentionally)
There are so many interpretations you can make with Memento it's mind boggling. I have several interpretations of what I think really happened to the protangonist and who knows which one applies the best and that's the beauty of Memento. Nolan leaves it up to the viewer but in a satisfying way and ends (or begins it, so to speak) it as such.
There's no cheap plot device used to steer it toward a certain interpretation or make it feel like it cheated the viewer of a certain conclusion. Just a brilliant, brilliant movie that demands multiple viewings (Jeez, I feel like watching it now) and epic in my book.
Of course TDK is another example of thier combined brilliance. If this Inception movie is not written in tandem with this brother then it may not be as good as I expect but I think he did.Last edited by Seymour Scagnetti; 11-14-2009, 04:20 PM.Comment

No AFAIK his brother wrote the screenplay as well but I'm sure Chris collaborated with him like in the Batman movies.Last edited by Seymour Scagnetti; 11-14-2009, 04:15 PM.Comment
