    Re: Official DROID Discussion Thread

So I dropped my droid yesterday and completely shattered the screen. I don't have insurance on it and was outside the 30 day period so they wouldn't let me add it. The phone still works fine so I brought it to Verizon hoping they could fix it. They said they couldn't but are sending me a replacement phone for $50.

I'm not sure how I got a replacement with no insurance for less than the deductible if I did have insurance. Maybe they screwed up but this isn't the first time I've heard of them doing this. Maybe it's because the rest of the phone was fine and only the screen was damaged?

The replacement phone is probably a return or refurbish but that's fine. I'm just happy I don't have to pay full retail for a new one.

So the wife and I are thinking of switching to Verizon due to the fact that we can't get a damn signal where we live now with TMo.

If we do, I'm def picking up the Droid. Played with a co-worker's earlier and found it to be quite awesome.

Also a Verizon rep told him on the phone that they're running a special now on them...buy one get one free. That would work out nicely for us.

Well working in Telecom I can tell you Verizon is way better than Tmobile.

2.1 is coming out later this month.

A video of a guy who has already placed it on his phone is shown on youtube.

                Very fast.

That's actually a rooted Droid with the 2.1 software hacked into it. You can do it yourself, if you're savvy enough. But be warned that there are reports of people bricking their Droids. PM if you're interested.

I also don't think it's been confirmed that they're releasing 2.1 on the Droid but I could be wrong. I thought that OS was for the Nexus One. There is another system update for the Droid later this month, but so far there hasn't been much news to it. Hopefully it is the 2.1 upgrade.. that would be sweet!

Also just wanted to give you guys a heads up on a new Keyboard called SWYPE. It's free, and it's really easy and fast to use. Believe me. I'm not a big fan of the on-screen keyboard, but using this makes me type out sentences in seconds!

Swype keyboard preview for Droid leaked

You may have heard about Swype before -- it's an innovative input method from the co-inventor of T9, Cliff Kushler. Currently Swype is only officially available on Windows Mobile. However, a preview version of Swype for Android has leaked. This version of Swype supports high res devices such as the Droid and has a surprising amount of polish for early version. I might dare say they might be close to release.

If you have a Droid, you owe it to yourself to try this out. It's fast, accurate and fun -- Swype Inc. should be very pleased with themselves.
Follow the instructions on the page. You have to allow non-android market apps to be installed.

                      Is the Eris 3G?

That's probably the one I'm going with, just curious.

I think most here have the Motorola Droid, but I do also think that both the Droid and Droid Eris have the same Android OS

Actually the Eris is on Android 1.5 (may possibly be upgraded to 2.01 or 2.1 in the future, I do know Verizon also released an upgrade for Eris)

And I do believe the Eris is on the 3G network.

Funny story, I had to type out a long text message to my ex. Probably would of taken me about 30 minutes to type out (seriously)

With Swype, it took me about 10 minutes. Seriously. I'm so fast with this thing it's not even funny. The only thing I'm not a big fan of is that it needs correct punctuation. I can't spell out D-O-N-T and get Don't.

I need to spell it like D-O-N-'-T

which isn't bad since the apostrophe has it's own button.

LOL, you must not have gone through the tutorial.

                                To do punctuation like that just swype it. D - O - N ' T

Swipe the apostrophe after the N. It's to the right of the space bar.
