    Re: Official Android Discussion Thread

We had a Verizon Rep at work today. I stopped by to talk to him for a few minutes about the Samsung Galaxy Nexus. He actually didn't have very many positive things to say...even mentioned he really hoped this would be better than the last Galaxy phone which he termed as a major disappointment.

He said that I should wait until January 2012 as the Motorola RAZR Maxx will release then and he claims this phone will be excellent. He mentioned you can play 12hrs of video on one battery. He also said this phone will come with ICS as compared to the RAZR that's releasing in November with Gingerbread.

Has anyone heard anything about the RAZR Maxx? I can't seem to find any articles on this phone.

Those guys arent usually so talkative about non released phones... Id take what he said with a grain of salt

Usually, they will show you a unit one of them already has early or would send you a demo unit if available, but rarely do they just out information like that...lol

Has that guy you talked to even touched the Nexus? Because it doesn't seem like it. Also, just because the Nexus is carrying the name Galaxy, doesn't mean it has any correlation to previous Samsung Galaxy phones. The name is purely a branding thing, pure and simple.

I'd wait for real reviews before jumping to any conclusions.

Yeah, those reps are the last people I would listen to in terms of what to get. They are NOT knowledgeable on the technical aspects of software or hardware, and certainly aren't in the know as far as release dates unless it's about a phone that will be out in two weeks. They are the type that will simply say things like, "This phone has an 8MP camera, so obviously it's a better camera than the phone with only a 5MP camera."

Also, the Nexus uses a Texas Instruments CPU(same with the new RAZR), not Tegra 2. It's basically an upgraded version of what came out on the Bionic. The camera is also said to have no lag when taking pictures.

            Re: Official Android Discussion Thread

To add a bit of detail... This guy was our companies representative from Verizon (not some random rep at a Verizon store - no one trusts them). Today we did a BlackBerry firmware update on all of our BB phones (200+). Whenever we do large upgrades to our BB phones, we bring in our Verizon representative along with 2-3 Verizon tech's to help with the upgrade/issues etc... I'm the IT Manager and orchestrate this upgrade with my team, so I've worked closely with this guy for the past 3 years. This might be why he was forthcoming with this information.

I took him off to the side and wanted to talk to him about the Galaxy because I'm due for an upgrade on my personal phone and it caught my eye. Of course, this is one man's opinion...but he was very passionate about the RAZR Maxx and waiting until it arrives in January. Until that moment, I was certain I was purchasing the Galaxy, but this is a guy I trust. He's never steered me wrong in the past. I'll probably call him next week to thank him for his partnership and try to get more information out of him...

Sorry to poop on your trustworthy friend, but Verizon reps haven't even been trained on the phone, no internal memos or anything have been sent out. They'd be plastered all over Android sites I visit daily.

How's he talking about the RAZR Maxx when it hasn't been announced at all? I've never even heard of it. It's not even like Motorola to release one flagship and then release another 3 months later. Sorry to say, but your guy is wrong.

The Galaxy Nexus will be nothing short of amazing. The battery life I'm not sure about, but if you've touched any of the Galaxy S II phones, you would know they can't get worse.

The only thing that makes sense is that they're "hush, hush" about the RAZR Maxx simply because they are releasing the Moto RAZR in the next few weeks. The only thing I found on the internet is the following article:

Of course they are simply stating that the Moto RAZR will release with ICS in early 2012. The November release still has Gingerbread 3.2. Maybe he thinks the early 2012 release with ICS will be called Maxx?

I agree, there are things that just don't make much sense to me, but I also don't know why this guy would make it up? He has nothing to gain and a lot to lose as he's our companies representative. He's making a nice amount of money off of our account. Plus he knows I'm unhappy with BlackBerry (he got an ear beating from me the day of that outage) due to their latest outage and could send a lot of business his way by purchasing a different phone for 200+ people.

If true, My first instinct is that it's a RAZR with a 720p screen... and probably ICS.

I'm not an expert in marketing by any means, but I find it hard to understand why Motorola would release the Bionic in Sept and then a superior phone two months later.

as nice as the new Razr seems. I'd be apprehensive about a moto because of their encrypted bootloaders and motoblur. both are bad news to me.

it won't be unlocked. The Razr. I hope Sprint gets the new Nexus phone. I'm trying to like the iPhone enough to get the 4S but it's not happening. I may end up keeping my Evo until Sprint starts rolling out their LTE devices mid-2012.

I don't see why he'd lie to you, and I'm sure Motorola will have a phone coming out early next year (The Maxx)....That being said, we've seen how delayed phones can be (Bionic, Nexus Prime a few weeks, etc). I know I can't hold out that long for a new phone.

The only thing worrying me about the Nexus Prime is the battery life...I hope it ends up being enough to get me through a whole day without having to charge too often...I doubt the Razr will be any better though, and I think ICS on the Nexus Prime beats out the Razr's hardware benefits.

Installed and played with iRis for a little bit today. Certainly worth some laughs at this point in the process. Here's a partial transcript of my "conversation"

                            Me: Hello, iRis.
iRis: Can you make me happy?
Me: That depends, what do you want?
iRis:I want you to order me about, master.
Me: What would you like me to tell you to do?
iRis: I would like you to tell me something you think.
Me: I think you're kinda cool.
iRis: You should try to be more like me.

I think the different between the galaxy nexus between the other galaxy phones is that this phone is a Nexus which makes a big different, its a pure google phone... so no touchwiz just pure android, not to mention that it comes with ICS
