    Re: Plasma Owners?

I have a 42" Panasonic, but it's not my gaming TV (I have a 70" SXRD for that).

If you are playing games, I'd suggest downloading a burn in DVD and playing that to burn in the set before you use it for gaming. That's what I would've done if I had used mine for gaming.

Damn George (Gears) even my lies have some truth to them. I was just messing around about burn ins. It is all good football glad you are enjoying your TV. I wouldn't really worry about burn ins. You will be fine.

I have a sony 55' sxrd and the picture is incredible, better than my plasma and obviously better than my LCD. No wonder it was an editors choice on cnet for 2+ years.

            Re: Plasma Owners?

Mine's an old plasma (2 yr old model) and gaming is fine. Great in fact!

Burn in on old plasmas is a lot worse than recent one's. Current plasmas only really suffer from temporary burn in, where a bit of grey noise or other movement will clear it quickly.

My older plasma gets a little bit of burn in with still health bars or stupid stuff like Zuma PSN where it's not made in wide screen so they just whack still images on the left and right borders but the burn in is only visible on pitch black areas and it is washed out when you have moving images over it for a while.

I gotta admit, at first I was s#itting myself thinking I'd never be able to game on the plasma and that I'd ruined it but you get over it pretty quick.

Mate, I sold tv's for the last 4 years until a recent change of job and can tell you not even the best of the best LCD was as good as a decent plasma. The black levels, the contrast in general, the crispness just awesome.

Even on low quality digital tv broadcasts where a low compression can make what we watch look a bit digitally blocky, this looks less noticeable on a plasma.

The only thing I don't like is that it uses quite a bit more power/energy and heats the room up a bit.

If I had to choose an LCD, the LED backlit Samsungs were the best for image quality but I personally wouldn't buy Samsung as they had a high faulty rate, especially out of the box.

The Sony LCD's were the best for never coming back faulty but the prices on their top of the line model was a bit too much.

Plasma is cheap, reliable, great quality and I doubt I'll go back to LCD. Was at a mates house last night and he was showing off his new Sony Full HD LCD with his PS3 and it didn't look as good as my 2 year old HD Plasma. That says it all.

sweet man, thanks. I have seen some IR on my set, but it goes fairly quick, I suppose I'm seeing some IR do to the set being new and only a few hours on it.

If you want to Break-In your PLASMA that allows the prosphers to age evenly giving you fairly accurate colors across the board, you should run Break-In Images during times your NOT watching TV.

Here's a site where you can download FREE Break-In Images. Burn the file to a DVD & your all good. Break-In should be @ least 100 hrs.

Then he didn't have the right settings as the out of the box settings on new TV's are usually way out of whack. I've owned both plasmas and LCD's and currently have a 52" 120 HZ LCD as my main TV and while plasmas have better blacks, on a properly set, good quality 120 HZ LCD I can't really tell the difference. The maintenance free worry of an 120 HZ LCD more than trumps the slightly better black levels of a plasma IMO.

I guess the main point I'm saying is I know burn-in is much less an issue these days but it is still there with plasmas that you have to be careful. If I spend that much money on a TV I want NO issues with burn in because it's always in the back of your mind with any plasma and you shouldn't have to worry about stuff like that with your TV that you have to maintain it like it's a car. If I fall asleep at night watching a movie and the DVD menu screen is on for 4 hours straight then I don't care with an LCD TV. I can watch 3 movies in a row at a 2:40:1 aspect level and not care with a LCD. That always bothered me with plasmas.

Lovin my LG plasma. As a former owner of a LCD, gotta say I made the right decision. Can't go back to a LCD.

I can live with "babying" my tv for a month (about 100 hrs) to enjoy the picture quality at $700 that would cost me at least $1000 in a comparable LCD.

Guess I should have broken my TV in, everyone else did. I made sure to play nothing but full screen content though so what did break in was even.

I can't vouch for any brands other than Panasonic, but my parent's have a 3 year old plasma. I had them break-it in for 100 hrs. After that it has been on vivid mode (highest contrast) and my mom falls asleep EVERY night with it one the same channel and no burn in or image retention.

So slight worry? Of course, when you spend a nice chunk of change. Real possibility? Not really if you stick with a known name brand.

As long as you lowered the contrast, you should be fine. Not even sure if the "break-in" is really needed to today's plasmas.

Only image retention I get is temporary. Left LastFm on xbox and where the huge red box in the top right was noticeable for about 30 seconds.

Panosonic have a thing in the menus called anti image retention or something like that. It makes a white bar go across the screen with a black background. I just figured it for something like in my case, and would make it go away.
