I don't think it's the skills that should be in question here. I agree that your friend is wrong. Lupe is a better "rapper", but Wale just brings something to the table that I haven't heard from any other artist to date. He's completely unique and he reps the DC sound at it's finest. Also, his beat selection was surprisingly vicious. I can listen to this cd for hours with all different types of rap heads.

Them Crooked Vultures was a solid cd, but to me it sounded too much like Queens Of The Stone Age under a different name, rather than a side project/super group. Both Grohl and Jones are exceptional musicians and I wish there would have been more of their influence in it all. It seems basically like Homme ran the show. Unlike Eagles Of Death Metal, Them Crooked Vultures don't sound like Homme is stepping outside his cozy QOTSA box.

different strokes. I can't get into Drake or Cudi at all. Well, Cudi sometimes.SAN ANTONIO SPURSComment

Honestly to have a remote chance of "liking" Drake, you have to be at least 25ish or younger.
Anything older than that and you really should have nothing to do with that kind of music.Comment

His music is extremely youngish.
Pretentious.
Something that I believe only people that are 25 and younger should be listening to "seriously".
I myself do not feel ashamed to be blasting his music in my car because I'm young and I'm allowed to be "dumb".
Let's make a clear distinction though: Drake>>>>Soulja Boy/Gucci/Etc.
Drake is extremely hit or miss. The marginal "hits" are pretty great IMO when you're in the right mood.Comment

Re: Your top albums of 2009?
Good explanation. I'll admit, when listening to Drake and Cudi, I did feel like I was just flat out too old for it. In Cudi's case, I could see him making an album that I like once he stops feeling sorry for himself during the entire record.
Back on topic: If I didn't mention Incredibad, I really should have. I don't know what year it came out, but I just found it this year, so it's on my list.Comment

I thought Middle Cyclone was a minor let down. It is a really good album, but it doesn't quite compare to her previous albums. Still, though, she's definitely top 5 on my all-time female vocalist list.

Re: Your top albums of 2009?
I didn't really pick up that many albums that were released this year. I tend to find myself going back and "discovering" things I missed the past few years. I guess I'm just getting old.
But anyways, here are my favorites of the ones I did pick up:
Rancid - Let the Dominoes Fall (Acoustic Version) - They'll always hold a special place in my heart from my younger days. They released this along with their "normal" studio album of the same name. They continue to evolve their sound, it's not for everyone, but man I listened to this for about a month straight after I heard it.
Propagandhi - Supporting Caste - This is one of the few bands that I listen to where I actually like every new album they release better than the last. This album kicks you in the teeth in a very good way.
The Boxer Rebellion - Union - Picked this up on a whim and was impressed. Pretty strong from front to back.
The Dead Weather - Horehound - Two words: Jack White. Everything he touches turns to gold.
I REALLY wanted to like Them Crooked Vultures. Really did. But every time I heard it I was just like, meh. Maybe I just had unrealistic expectations going into it, because I was expecting to be blown away and just wasn't. Really disappointing because it should be right up my alley.
And I've got some gift cert action to spend on iTunes - so since it was mentioned a lot in this thread and I've heard good things elsewhere, I'm finally going to pick up Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix right now.
EDIT: Halfway through the first song of Phoenix and there's at least a 90% chance I'm going to love this album.Last edited by ImTellinTim; 12-30-2009, 12:03 PM.Comment
