Yeah, they have a special socket on the receiver and on the speaker wire...rather than the red/black speaker connections on each that you can use on any speaker or receiver.

Ah. The LG is not like that though judging from pics on newegg

So is there anything terribly wrong with the LG other then it's a $200 HTIB?

It'll probably be fine for you, if you make sure it has the inputs you need (games, whatever)...just don't plan on upgrading it...

I figure if I am going to upgrade, i'll actually have a lot of money by then and could just sell it and start all over.

Why I have a thread going, how do you tell how powerful/good the sub will be? I'd like to be able to feel some rumble in my room. As far as audio comes, I'm a complete d/a. Y'all seem to know where you're talking about.

and wow amazon is really teasing me. The Panasonic set is down to $229, but I won't have my other gift card until tomorrow night. New question. I'm leaning towards the LG, but if the Panny stays at 229(It was like 250), which one would y'all go with? $230 is more my limit :/ $250 was actually pushing it

All of these subs in HTIBs are passive--meaning they don't have their own power source. And considering that power is being shared by the rest of the system--it will give an OK performance.

Too feel the action, you'd want an active sub. Those start at around $90 for a small 8 inch, 100W subwoofer. Probably find one used on ebay or craigslist for $50.

But for those you need a receiver that can drive it and has a sub input.

If you can get to $300 this would be MUCH MUCH better: http://www.amazon.com/Onkyo-HT-S3200...1514258&sr=1-3
It looks like I may be able to pick one of these up in a couple weeks, Now I just have to figure out how I'm going to hide the wires without drilling holes in my apartment.

only have to hide 2 wires. if you have long enough cable you can run it right along the baseboard. i've pulled up carpet to hide them and that works well--just takes more time and effort. or you can use area rugs or runners.

I'm hoping a buddy of mine has fishtape and I can try to actually run them under the carpet without having to go around the baseboards.

Panasonic is better. 5 disc dvd player vs. 1 disc dvd player, has auto set-up, the bambo cones for the rears will make placement easier

                          For a recap:
Onkyo > Panny > LG > Sony (IMHO, of course)

It's for my bedroom. TV is 42" Panny Plasma. Optical audio running from 360 and from TV.
What am I missing here? Why are people telling you that these 3 won't work for you. I'd get the Panasonic if I were you, I just like my speakers to match the tv. I'm gotta Samsung 50 in. with Samsung theatre that looks a lot like that Panasonic set.

Because you get MUCH BETTER performance and leave yourself more options (can hook up more things) with a system that has a dedicated receiver. And Onkyo speakers are infinitely better than any of those other 3 brands.

That Sony is the most limiting with proprietary speakers. Let's say you want to upgrade the speakers. Can't do it--you have to pay a premium price for Sony speakers and speaker wire. And even if you could, it would be a waste b/c a DVD player is driving them.

HTIBs w/o a true receiver are fine as long as your realize your limitations. When you go to upgrade, you'll have to start over from square one vs. being able to upgrade piece by piece.

It might be wise for the OP to live with the tv speakers, until he can make a more future proof investment. We are talking $70-80 more dollars.

But....if he is limited to a budget of $250 or less, the Panasonic would be the best of what's left.
