Chuck Berry may have been first but Elvis was the King (IMO).

So JayBee or anyone - did you watch the special on Valentines Day? I have watched the first part of it and I was just wondering if it was DirecTV or what but the cropping on the show is kind of off. Like the girl talking at the beginning, Ashley Judd I think it is, the top of her head is cut off. When it goes to the Elvis footage it goes away but then when it goes back to Ashley it's there again. It's odd and annoying and I'm just wondering if it's just my recording and/or my DirecTV?
Chuck Berry essentially invented rock and roll music, and is perhaps the most important person in the history of rock. Elvis took the music and did it well, but to put him in the same sentence as Chuck Berry completely discredits Berry. Berry created and innovated a genre. Elvis performed black music well, made it white (opening doors for Beatles, etc) and brought sex appeal to it. Berry essentially designed it, Elvis made it grow. Elvis was a performer, Berry was a creator.

Fyi, self anointed or anointed nicknames are silly. Elvis was referred to as the king of rock, doesn't mean he. Jackson anointed himself the king of pop, doesn't mean he was. As a joke on this whole concept, Howard Stern anointed himself the king of all media. It is nothing more than a nickname, funny that after awhile people begin to act like its a credible title.

      Re: Elvis Presley

Elvis did not refer to himself as the King of anything. In fact one Youtube clip has him saying to a fan who yells out that he's the King "there is only one true King and that's the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ".

I think the idea of "King" implies the person that most personifies that genre and to that I'd say that most certainly applies to Elvis, Michael Jackson and Howard Stern. I don't find it silly at all. And speaking of which, I don't believe Michael Jackson anointed himself King of Pop either, but as you say Howard Stern did invent the King of all media moniker and applied it to himself but that's a bit different than how those came about for Elvis and MJ.

P.S. - If you find any official Elvis items referring to Elvis as "the King" that was most likely after he died and applied in that manner by Priscilla, not Elvis himself.

I said either anointed or self anointed. Michael Jackson and Howard Stern were self anointed, Elvis was not. Point still the same.

Your point may be the same but I still disagree with it. I don't think it's silly or pointless for us to try to classify our superstars by what they accomplished in a given genre. That's all a title like "King" is. To each his own.

Nor do I, but many of the time it can become wrongly attributed, which is why I think Elvis as "the King of Rock" is complete BS. Rock is about writing, performing, innovating. A "king" or someone whose the "best" would have to be top notch in all three categories. The truth of the matter is I can only take Elvis with limited credibility as he was essentially a figurehead for someone elses brilliant song. He was a great singer, great dancer, wonderful performer, OK guitar player, non existent songwriter. That is not a king, that is a future American idol winner.

Well then you are not having an issue with the title, just who holds it. That's different. Your definition is simply different than mine and others from how you describe it. My definition is who most embodies and personifies that genre. Elvis is that person for Rock. But I see what you're saying about the criticisms as they are legitimate criticisms. I think the fact that Elvis was such a brilliant singer and performer and was the first to change the direction of rock outweighs the fact that he didn't write his own material.

Yep, I agree to disagree as well. Just a difference of opinion. At least, unlike in so many disagreements one can get into here we can both walk away knowing the other person understood our position. That's what irks me sometimes about OS and forum disagreements, the fact that you feel like the other person really doesn't understand your point.

I watched some of it, but I was dozing in and out. I seemed to noticed Ashley Judd a little heavier than usual.

Seems like it my be a little depressing-the last years of his life.
