Well as I understood it, Xfactor isn't just a signing competition, you can do other things to impress. The easiest way to explain it would be the rock band Kiss. They are not the most talented singers but they were extremely successful, ie they had the "X-factor". So I think this show will allow for more than just people with great singing voices like Idol does.

Also, I've read that there are mentors (judges I thought I read) that actually tutor the people to get better and they are judged as well.

So I guess bottom line is it's more a talent competition than a singing one. That's how I understood it anyways.

What I don't understand is how that's going to work. XFactor is essentially the same exact thing as American Idol with a different name. The only thing different that I know if is that I think the age limit was higher, at least it was in the British version of it.

I assumed X Factor would be the replacement to AI, much like the original X Factor was to 'Pop Idol' in Britain.

Easily the worst season in terms of talent. Now the auditions are over and I can only remember 2 solid singers (the Korean guy and Jermaine)

If you look at the history of the show, we have already seen the winner during the auditions. It looks like America has run out of talent.

I also got a little bit tired of all the sad stories tonight: poverty, death, second chances, etc....

I bet you Pants On The Ground Guy would get the most votes during the first week.

Van - you and me both, i'm tired of the "pity me but I can sing!" angle AI is taking. It's really getting tiresome. I also agree about the lack of memorability of the singers. However I'm not going to say that America has run out of talent because we still have a ways to go and there is usually a huge improvement from the auditions to later rounds.

Case in point - I'm a huge fan of Daughtry, I have both of his albums and voted for him each week..but with that being said I don't remember his audition really being memorable at all.

American Idol is on tommorow not tonight.

Howard Stern spoke out about the rumours that he might replace Simon next season. He said they would have to pay him a ton of money since he already makes a lot.

I would like to see Stern because he would be pretty blunt but he doesn't fit the AI family friendly image. I can already picture a hot girl coming into the room and before she even sings, Stern would say welcome to Hollywood, lol.

oh i can never remember as they've seemingly had it on every night at the start of the week at some point.

You're right about Stern, I would love it if he was on there but he's not very family friendly at all, although to be honest Simon has gotten a little more raunchy as of the last couple of years himself.

But Howard is one of the few people I could honestly think of being able to replace Simon without the ratings suffering.

I'm just mad about the whole Big Mike thing. Tonight you get to watch the whole his baby is being born thing, knowing that his big mouthed Dad gets him booted out after he makes the top 24. He should still be on the show....
