I figured I'd post this here since it is somewhat related:

Venom movie on the way?

Venom is coming back to the big screen.

The Los Angeles Times reports that Sony is in negotiations with Chronicle director Josh Trank to helm the Spidey villain's solo feature film.

The studio has been developing a Venom spinoff film for awhile after the character of Eddie Brock appeared in Spider-Man 3 played by Topher Grace. The Hunger Games director Gary Ross was attached to the film for awhile before moving on.

The plan is reportedly to hire a new writer to pen a new Venom screenplay and to have a different actor other than Grace play the role next time around.

There's also no word on whether or not the character would fit into the rebooted universe of The Amazing Spider-Man, but it would seem reasonable to assume that it will.

Trank was recently reported to be up for directing Fox's reboot Fantastic Four Reborn, but if this Venom news pans out it would appear that deal didn't work out.

As cool as this would be, I just don't know how much sense it makes to give Venom his own movie. I know Venom has had his own comics and whatnot before, but would he be able to carry a movie? I also don't know how it would work since I'm not familiar with how Venom is treated when he isn't trying to take down Spider-Man.

Interesting news nonetheless.

Venom has this weird crazy code of honor when it comes to things non Sipder-Man. Recently Flash Thompson has become the Venom host and is a government black ops agent.

Yeah if they're going to make a Venom movie I think they should hold off on it for a while and use Flash Thompson as the host. The way he's being portrayed in the comics right now is very interesting as he's not a villain but he's not a clear cut hero either because Thompson is struggling with trying to control the symbiote but he's trying to do the best he can. There's actually a very interesting thing going on whereby Flash doesn't want anyone to know that he's Venom and wants to protect his girlfriend to the point that he actually dumped her because of his situation.

But i'm sure they'll be lazy and go with a full on Eddie Brock as rampaging villain story.

There's been a lot of speculation surrounding Marc Webb's interpretation of The Amazing Spider-Man. But from what we've seen in the trailer, there is definitely more emphasis on not only the origins of Spider-Man but of Peter Parker himself. In a recent interview, the director spoke to the character's backstory, which he claims will be revealed over the course of several films.

"I wanted to give the audience something new, so that started off with getting underneath the parents' story, which will unfold over probably a few movies," Webb told MTV News. "We don't totally wrap up that story in this first movie. It's sort of an ongoing mystery. That was something that was interesting to me."

Webb noted, however, that he still intends to uphold certain aspects of the Spider-Man canon, including the spider bite and Peter's relationship with Uncle Ben.

"This is probably a reveal," he continued, "but there is no wrestling match in this movie. The character is evolving in a different way. It's about finding a balance between iconic elements of the Spider-Man mythology -- like how Uncle Ben's death transforms him emotionally -- but it happens in a different way... [Peter] is bitten by a spider, but maybe it's not a radioactive spider. Or maybe it is! You'll have to see."

The Amazing Spider-Man hits theaters on July 3.

I hate when movies rewrite the origins of an iconic character.

At least spiderman isn't an adult alien in this one.

Yeah i'm not so hot on that either. I'm hoping there's a rationale behind that like Peter doesn't think of the secret ID idea until much later or something like that. I'm not too upset about changing the wrestling match part of the origin as that's pretty much dated and hokey but if they go for an emo/weepy origin i'll go mad.

They better keep the radioactive spider in this origin though.

Let's just hope they don't pull a Spider-Man 2 where his identity is revealed to like 100 people. That was so stupid.

Anyways, I agree with SPTO. I don't mind them getting rid of the wrestling match part of the origin. I just hope some of the key components of the origin don't change radically.

Not true.

You don't see it in the current Batman movies, but in Tim Burton's and the 3 following, Batman revealed his identity to 4 different women because he loved them. LOL

Spiderman needs to be back under Marvel control, whenever, if ever, that happens, we may finally see a proper reboot.
