Spider-Man Reboot's Projected Box Office Take: Huge

Why would Spider-Man get a reboot — this time, with Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker — only five years after the Tobey Maguire–led franchise churned out its last installment? Because of $$$$$. THR is reporting that the new Spidey movie, The Amazing Spider-Man, is tracking extremely well with all kinds of audience demographics, "suggesting a six-day opening of $125 million or more, the best showing of any summer film outside of box office goliath The Avengers." Well then!

It's a tad surprising, from where I'm sitting, that this new flick would do as well. I know that the Sam Raimi–directed Maguire run was huge (THR again: "All three movies set their own box office records, with Spider-Man 3 opening to $151.1 million over the May 4-6 weekend in 2007, then the biggest three-day debut of all time), but I thought that'd be a factor against the reboot succeeding. You'd think the "old" Spidey movies being so popular, and so readily available, and the new Spidey movie (at least from the look of the trailers) being not so vastly different in tone, would have limited the audience turnout. Well, nope. Not at all. You could prognosticate that the audience will skew preteen, and therefore be made up of kids actually too young for the Maguire run, but certainly part of the lesson here is that one can't underestimate the timeless appeal of Spider-Man himself. When this new franchise runs out, they may only wait, like, three months before hiring all new good-looking young people and doing it all over again. Also, some credit should probably be paid to Garfield and his co-star/real-life love interest Emma Stone. Yeah, they have the brand name behind them. But if they're able to pack 'em into the theaters like this, maybe Andrew and Emma's movie star drawing power should be respected as such. And look, if Andrew Garfield's surprising Spider-Man success means even the slightest chance of an eventual Eduardo Saverin–Social Network spinoff, I'm onboard.

New poster released today but I"ve seen it before.

Interesting. I didn't think twice about since they used the same exact type of poster as far back as Spiderman1. The only difference is the sky color hue is different.

I'm actually kind of surprised. I personally don't expect it to fare nearly closely as well as The Avengers, or even The Dark Knight Rises. Then again, what do I know?

I haven't heard any early reviews yet, but I hope this movie is actually very good as well. Nothing says it has to be spectacular, even after as much exposure in this film as we've gotten.

It's Spider-Man. I'm not surprised at all.

I would bet that many people heard how bad Spider-Man 3 was and didn't watch it (I being one). Not that it affected much because the movie did amazingly well. But count me in as a person that wants to see the new film simply because I heard they mucked up the first trilogy (I'm one of many that believe Spider-Man 2 was one of the best, if not the best, superhero films ever written).

Also, there's something about a timeless tale and wanting to see how someone else envisions it.

This is why I don't get all rattled up when a work is adapted and it turns out slightly different. The point of new media is to present old media in new ways.

And 5 years is a long time. I could maybe understand the complaints if it came out two years ago (even though I wouldn't share them) but it has been long enough without a new Spider-Man movie.

Me too. It's the only superhero movie I'll see at the theatres.
DKR and Avengers can wait till BR release - especially DKR. I wasn't impressed with TDK so I don't need to spend more than $5 to see the third installment.

There's a slightly spoiler-ish review of the movie on Kotaku.

There's no major spoilers in there (unless you don't know the origin of Spider-Man) but it does tell you some things that happen, so if you don't want to know anything going in then don't read.

The review says it's good and that this particular Spider-Man character is a lot better and more true to the comics than the Spider-Man in the Raimi movies (and by that I mean the wittiness and the difference between Peter as himself and Peter as Spider-Man) , which is great to hear. Also, the supporting cast is said to be really good as well.

The one big negative in the review -- and I know a lot of people have an issue with it here -- is that they can't seem to keep the mask on Spider-Man. I don't like that that's the case, but if that's going to be one of the only complaints about this movie then that's a good thing.

I can't wait to see this next week. I hope they have a plan for where they're going to take this version of the franchise because that's what killed them with the original trilogy. What (supposedly) killed Spider-Man 3 was the producers' insistence on certain characters like Venom being in the movie, so if that's going to be the case again, I just hope they lay the groundwork for that instead of trying to slap it together in half an hour.

Its still a comic book movie and the real main deal is spiderman...how can you not understand that.

Well apparently the same thing happens in the Ultimate comic books where someone finds out Peter is Spider-Man basically every arc. And they have drawn influence from that universe (I think Brian Michael Bendis helped in some aspect of this movie) so maybe it just isn't a movie thing.

You mean regarding the mask not staying on? Or do you mean something else? Just trying to understand where you're getting that they are playing too much to the emotional side.

Nope, it's not just a movie thing. This has been part of the comics for awhile and I have no issue with them making better characters/story.

The Amazing Peter Parker?

In all honesty I'm not keen on the Peter Parker portrayal in the many trailers I've seen. Might see it with free movie passes in a few weeks, but that's the extent of it
