C'mon now Dre. It's a bit more than that. For those books, I can see people really getting this. If it's as seamless as the iPhone/iTouch, then it can snag in a few people. It has a few pluses and minuses.

On another note, how many of you musical geniuses carry YOUR WHOLE MUSIC LIBRARY on your portable musical device? Even with the old 160 GB ipods, there are some things you'll leave behind. For everyday work and play, I'm sure that I will not listen to 17.6 hours worth of anything. Some of you guys have to be realistic.

One last note, do you think that you could Remote stuff from your iPhone/iTouch to this thing? THAT could make this more appealing.......

I can honestly say that this is a disappointment just from the fact that their is no multitasking.

For a device with the amount of storage that I would want (64 GB) I'd have to pay $800 and I can't listen to pandora while reading google news?

According to what? Most of the comments I'm reading on sites are very similar to those in this thread.

This is partially combining a few devices.

The people who are commenting are those that wanted a full laptop replacement, in every single way. It would be like those looking for a laptop to replace a 40-node cluster for number crunching.

There are going to be individuals where this will meet a need. There's really no more to discuss at this point. It's out there, and it will sell, and it will replace devices people use currently. The exact point of this device.

So you don't get the 16GB device.

The only reason we're going in circles is because people refuse to understand that it will be a substitute for individuals, whether it be a PC or an iPod touch. Ultimately, it depends on what you use the device for.

Would it be realistic to say this will be THE device for the individual who carries around a DVD to watch on their laptop? No. Convergence in technology is obviously the purpose behind Apple's devices. You've proven time and time again you need to have anything and everything at your disposal at all times, considering you're carrying an iPod touch, iPhone and now, from your comments, a laptop. If you're expecting it to be the replacement of all those devices in EVERY single way, be it capacity, size, features, etc, then this isn't the device FOR you. For many, it apparently will be. Seems like it already is.



And you don't think publishers will move towards ebook versions with a device such as this leading the way?

Should we turn back the clock a few years back where people were saying the App Store wouldn't take off?

Fart apps and games with-standing, there's plenty of potential for a device like this. PLENTY. And that ultimately falls to your needs, no?

The mistake you keep making is that you assume I'm only looking at it from my perspective. I'm not because that would be silly. I'm not the typical person when it comes to tech. I'm looking at it from a college students perspective. My cousin (who is in college) like listening to music while going to class and she does that with her ipod. She has a cell phone. She has a laptop for taking notes in class and research. She is the typical college student and the iPad wont help her lighten her load. Its not a phone, its not a viable music player and it doesnt have enough memory to replace her laptop even at 64GB. She isnt a tech nerd like me. She doesnt have 100GB of movies and music. She is your average everyday student.

Like you said, I like having all my music with me. Now if Apple came out with a 64GB Iphone, that lessens my load because I can get rid of my Ipod Touch. The Ipad doesnt do that.

Well I was referring to a previous post with the email comment but I think I said a few people will buy this in the beginning of the thread. I just dont think it will go over well in masses.

I think as a replacement anything that price really isnt justifiable. In all honesty nothing jumped out at you. I guess it would be cool to have but I think personally and business wise its not a must have or a need.

I do but I delete songs I dont like. There is no way someone has 160GB of music on their ipod of music that they like.

They can still have things that will be updated later on in the year right? They could essentially come out with update iPhones, iTouches, and MBPs right? If so, then I think they could have held on for 2 more months. The 60 day wait seems a bit too long.

On another note, I guess those Verizon users are seriously still waiting for Apple to jump ship. I guess there is still time for that also. I want to know what options are possible in regards to all of this stuff.......

Macworld is in 2 weeks so that when the Mac updates come. They usually dont announce iPhone updates until the spring. Itouch in the Fall.

There are plenty of students in the scenario you describe where this will meet their needs. And yes, they are your average everyday student. The student that has a netbook just to go online because they hate carrying a laptop. The student that doesn't use their phone because it's too small.

To act like there isn't a use for this.. c'mon. It shouldn't even be a discussion. People bought a kindle and I can't relate. Doesn't mean I don't see their want/need for it.

The draw of being able to carry my entire music collection isn't the ability to listen to all 17.6 hours in one day. The draw is that I can listen to anything at any time. It's all at my fingertips. I'm not sitting there going "oh, I really want to listen to Rush. Oh wait, it's not on my 16 gb device. Damn."

...hence the point of convergence.

That's what was so great about the iPhone. It fully combined a phone and an MP3 player and made BOTH of them BETTER. PLUS, it added in computer-related things (internet, games, etc.)

My point exactly. If the textbook publishers aren't making e-versions of their textbooks, then that is an invalid point. And, as of right now, most textbook publishers aren't doing this. It's a great idea in theory, it just doesn't work that way.

The iPhone sold incredibly well (and therefore got more app developers on board) because it was incredibly innovative. It FULLY combined a phone with an MP3 player AND added some features that computers have (internet).

Well guys, publishers have been making ebook versions of their textbooks for the last few years. Before I left McGraw-Hill in 2007, they were beginning to move into ebooks for their texts. I bet that Pearson and Thomson are probably not too far behind if not there already. These are the three largest textbook publishers in the world. There is opportunity here for an iBookstore or even the vendor that these publishers are using to make even more money if they can push their ebooks out to the iPad (I hate that name).

One place you guys can check is CourseSmart where they have a large collection of textbooks as ebooks.
