I read books all the time on my ipod touch and it doesn't bother me at all, in fact it works great since it's backlit and I can read in the dark.

The thing that gets me most about this whole thing is the name, iPad, LOL...it's just disturbing.

Local library? They still have those?? lol

Reading on an iPod isn't really that bad at all. I can see it being a problem for those with poor vision.

This vs. the most popular e-reader... it's not even a contest, really. The more you look at this device, the more it seems to be a convergence of everything you'd expect from an Apple device and e-reader. Disappointing considering the potential for a laptop replacement with just a simple change to the OS.

Disappointing considering the potential for a laptop replacement with just a simple change to the OS.

Bigger memory and using an actual OS? Then you'd have more of a offer IMO...but obviously the processor can't handle OSX in a package that small? I don't know, the lack of multitasking is annoying. I could see myself getting a tablet for the living room with that dock (and yet still having the portability), but I like to have my e-mail, a chat client, and websites (among other crap) open at once...

I'm more open to the concept now, but it'll be 5 years until Apple makes it must own I bet. Then it's just a more portable touchscreen laptop, but I understand that it'd be too expensive to make right now.

I'm out on e-ink things anyways until libraries fully adopt and have a ebook checkout process. I just don't buy books that often, I just reserve ones I want and eventually get them for free...Off topic, but i'm shocked at how few people actually use their local libraries...

I'm with you 1000% mgo. I really wanted a Kindle, but will wait until you can just rent a book for 30 or 60 days for 5-6 bucks. Then I went to my library and I really don't even want or need a Kindle at all anymore. They have almost any book you can want and if they don't, they will order it in for you.

Currently reading Big Russ and Me, I've got a couple other good books from the library waiting for me when I'm done with that.

Yup. Multi-tasking, no camera.... probably the only way to keep the price as it is currently.

Which I understand...what I want is more like a MacBook Air tablet, but no way in hell am I paying over 2k or whatever it costs lol

Just the whole, "We're standing on Kindle's shoulders" comment. I dunno, you're probably right, similar product design for completely different demographics.

I think Apple is overestimating the Ebook market. I'm the only person I know with a Kindle. I dont see the Ipad opening up the ebook market at that price point. Especially if Amazon comes out with a cheaper color Kindle in 2010.

Hmmm. For years and years, it seemed everything was getting smaller and smaller to be hip, convenient, and portable.

Now this thing comes out and were on our way back to having everything big and heavy again?
Whats next, 80's cell phones getting hip again

I don't know anyone with a Kindle. My mom reads way way more than I do, but she uses the library. I'm not cheap, but I don't really have a desire to spend 20 bucks on a single book when I can wait a little while and get a bunch for free at the library. Eventually I'll probably convert, just not worth it for me now...95% of books I personally only read once.

Most of the media I've seen is reacting with "Eh, it's cool, but it's missing this..." or "Not really revolutionary like the iPod or iPhone"...

There's also a lot of disappointment in it using the iPhone OS, it's just nothing new/cool.

I felt the same way until I really looked on the trains here in NYC and during my flights. There's actually a good amount of people with them.

Kindle Ex is currently sold out at Amazon as well. So people are apparently buying them.

On a side note, the iPhone is one of the coolest things I have ever purchased.
