In a nutshell, after the shooting Boyd is taken to the hospital-he will live as indicated in the previews for next week as a hospitalized, recuperating Boyd receives Raylan as a visitor. Boyd ask Raylan if he purposely missed the heart, to which Raylan replies, "I shoot to kill." In the novella "Fire In The Hole" which reportedly has much of the dialog of last night's opener, Boyd is killed by Raylan. The implication in the article I read is that Boyd living is a result of crack shot Raylan intentionally missing the heart, although he obviously could have perished from the "Off Heart" shot. To reiterate the hospital scene was a preview of next week

In other great news for the series Justified scored the second highest series premiere numbers ever for an FX show with 4.16 million viewers behind The Shield's first episode on March 12, 2002 (4.83 million).

SOLID first episode. I can't believe the ratings were so high. That's very rare for a new show.

I will DVR this this week. FX really does good shows. The Shield along with the Wire are my 2 all time favorite shows. Now, I noticed the other night that the guide said the show went from 10-1111 pm. so for DVR people you may want to extend it by 15-20 mins when you tape it.

Thought it was fantastic. Haven't really had an hour long drama show to get into since The Shield, so glad this one lived up to the hype. Enjoyed the whole thing, but as said earlier, it's cool to see a cop show in a small rural town. Totally refreshing.

Loosely, elements maybe, such as "small southern town law enforcement", and racial overtones. Whether you are talking about the Sidney Poiter/Rod Steiger movie or the Carroll O'Connor TV series the main difference from Justified is that in "Heat" the protagonist and antagonist were both lawmen and particularly in the movie racial tension was at the forefront. "Heat" was more about race relations then kicking a$$. As a matter of fact the other parallel you could make would would be "new sheriff in town" with Givens as a crack gunman to Poiter's crack detective.
