Re: Anyone who understands the Oscar process, please explain...

What winners do you guys agree with most - Grammy winners or Oscar winners? Grammy's seem to be about what is most popular now while the Oscars seem to almost always ignore the highest grossing/most wellknown movies of the year in favor for the smaller movies - though there are exceptions as Avatar obviously shows.

And I agree with the majority of the sentiments here that Avatar and TDK had a lot in common apart from the visual-feast that was the majority of Avatar's appeal.

The Oscars aren't great by any means, but the Grammys are absolutely terrible every year.

While music is obviously much more taste dependent than movies, some choices are just inexcusable.

District 9 FTW. Best movie ever IMO!

The Grammy's are a joke, especially lately. Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga are you kidding me?!? The Grammy awards just seem to be a TV broadcast of whats popular right now. Of course, there are some good artists represented there, but they are the minority.

The Oscar are good I think, but you have to realize that there are some built in bias's to the academy's picks such as comedies and sci fi/fantasy films. Films rarely break these boundaries. Fortunately, we saw a little of that this year (Avatar and District 9), but The Hangover was noticeably left out.

I don't why you guys are so surprised at Avatar. It has been well represented at all the award shows so far, including wins for director and best picture at the Golden Globes. It was also loved by critics. Personally I loved the movie, but I understand why people wouldn't like it.

The only best picture nom I have a problem with is The Blind Side. Its a good film, but it wasn't a great film at all to me. There were more deserving films in my opinion. Star Trek, The Hangover, Invictus, and Public Enemies would all be more worthy best picture noms for me.

Also nothing against the 5 noms for best leading actor, but its a shame that Matt Damon didn't get a nod for The Imformant.

These are some of the choices I strongly disagree with. The only major category Avatar belongs in is Visual Effects. If you're going simply on box office, Avatar is the most over-rated movie of all-time. Outside of the amazing visual effects, there's nothing else that is good about the film.

Sandra Bullock is getting the Julie Roberts (Erin Brockovich) treatment. I would be stunned if Bullock doesn't win even though her performance in The Blind Side was nothing special. It's also ironic Bullock is going to win because her role was actually first offered to Julia Roberts but she turned it down.

I also have no idea why (500) Days Of Summer wasn't nominated for Original Screenplay.

I totally disagree with George Clooney and Up In the Air.
Thought it was very boring and bland if you will.
The best picture of the year needs "to move me" or play with my emotions.
              This film did neither.

The Grammy's are what everyone wants the Oscar's to be: best selling album/artist wins.

It's best selling album unless that album makes the oldies uncomfortable and then it's whichever 1950s-1970s person released a new album.

                        Got it.

While I did enjoy his performance, it's not what sells me on the film. I thought the story was well-written and the entire film well produced and directed.

However, I'm also a big Batman fan, I do not like any Batman film before Batman Begins and I'm probably biased. I admit that.

I remember when the film first come out and I didnt like Heaths preformance as much as all the kool aid drinkers. I was bashed for days on TDK thread.
Again if he was still alive everyone would not have went nuts about him in TDK.

The fact that he's dead made the performance worse, for me. It would have been a lot better knowing: "He can one-up this performance in the next movie."

So, again, you cannot say "everyone" in your posts when they are strictly your opinion.

Yeah, It kind of reminded me when The Crow came out after Brandon Lee died. There was a lot of hype over his performance because of this. Although some were probably too young to remember all of that.
