Re: Game of Thrones (HBO Sunday nights @ 9PM EST)

A little off topic, but since I started this series after sven's posts and hype, I'm curious as to what my next series should be. I'm torn between Stephen King's Dark Tower and Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time.

Any suggestions? Feel free to PM me so as to not clutter the thread.

    As for the show:

    Spoiler

My wife and I have a black tie affair that evening, but I'm thinking of sneaking out early to watch the show in our hotel room...I can skip the dessert and cocktails, LOL.

Not making this post because of anything in particular, but would it be alright to have people who have read the books put any things that haven't happened in the shows yet in spoilers? For the sake of us who want to experience things "fresh"...

I haven't read Dark Tower so I don't know about it but the first WoT book bored me to tears. I made it about 250 pages in before giving up. Jordan's writing was just so tedious and his characters were like cardboard cut outs. Too bad too cuz we make those books where I work so I could have had the entire series for free.

Even though I haven't read it I'd still recommend Dark Town over WoT for what that is worth.

And the first 3-4 WoT books were readable compared to the next 30 or 40. Ugh.

Do NOT start the Wheel of Time series if you've already read Martin's books. It's a huge downgrade.

That is the major downside to reading this series, other fantasy novels never seem to be as good. A bit weird at times, but look in to Dan Simmon's Hyperion cantos. 4 decent sci-fi books that I believe they are making in to a movie or movies.

Also on the subject, I am barely now ordering the books and have already got a season pass to the Series (DirecTV). I don't mind, in fact I want to be brought up to speed with what exactly is happening and going to happen in the future.

If someone would be so kind I sure would appreciate it. I'm one of those guys that likes to know what happens ahead from those who have read the books. Oh and don't forget to wrap it in the spoiler tags so as not to piss off any other members.

              Thanks!

Niether. Stephen Erickson's Malazan Books of the Fallen should be next. This is coming from a fan of the Wheel of Time novels as well.

Interesting because I was also thinking of starting The Dark Tower series. Thanks for the recommendation.

Love the second video. Theon gets some screen time and some backstory! Can't wait.

For the person asking about reading the book. I think you have a good idea. I would watch the episodes and then read the book personally.
I would do this in reverse actually, after watching the first episode I read the book which made me understand whats going on a bit more clearly.
