Audio quality isn't that great, but I just found this band about a week ago and am really digging them. They have a clear classic rock influence, which is (to be honest) a breath of fresh air in the indie-rock community.

Old school Hip-hop, classic Rock, old school R&B.

Today's music is pre-packaged, processed crap with no substance. And to make it worse, a lot of them have no talent at all. Granted, the 80's and 90's (up to about '95) pushed out a lot of no-talent hacks in all of those genres, but at least the songs were good.

Nowadays, most of the stuff isn't memorable at all. I don't listen to it. In fact, I haven't purposely listened to the radio since 1996, and everytime someone happens to have it on and I hear a song, I realize that I'm not missing anything.

I have a really old school taste in music. I find a lot of stuff today at least mainstream wise is prepackaged, lacking heart and the singers all try vocal tricks that end up making them sound lifeless.

I was just listening to some music from the Funk Brothers who were the Motown house band. That stuff was and still is magical to this day. The funny thing is back in the day a lot of people called Motown white bread soul! Funny how time can change things.

So basically you don't know what today's music sounds like. Mainstream radio and top 40 music sucks - always has, always will. People always look back and remember the good music from the past, the Beatles, Zeppelin, Sabbath, etc, but coincidentally the all the bad stuff is left in the past.

I guess compared to Stax they had a point. IIRC, Motown had their artists basically go through finishing school before they could perform in front of people to work on their appearance/styling and their choreography.

Yes but they were complaining about the musical composition too as Motown used to hire out the Detroit philharmonic from time to time to help in recordings and would bring out a full 10-15 piece band on tour.

That's another problem with a lot of the mainstream stuff today. (I believe some of the underground stuff is a lot more substantive) The music more or less sounds the same and is pretty much interchangeable.

I obviously do, and I think I explained that quite clearly in the post you quoted... not sure what you missed there. Besides that, there are other places besides the radio to hear music...

I totally disagree with the "always has" part.

The same points being raised about today's music are valid for any era.

When I was a kid, Afrika Bambatta was Old School.

The music (90's Hip Hop) I listened to in HS is Old School now. I listen to that 95% of the time today.

There is truth to that, but there are also some tangible factors. For example, back when Aretha Franklin was coming in, it wasn't uncommon for a singer to do an entire track without any kind of effects or tracking aids. Basically, if you couldn't sing, you were done.

Since voice correction and heavy effects became big in the 80's that all changed. Now you have auto-tune. This has turned hacks into Superstars. But like I said, at least in the 80's there were some well-written songs from those hacks. The hacks today don't even have well written songs.

I think a lot of people take Axl's vocals for granted - I think they fail to realize how much he could change the style of his voice to give each song a distinct character.

I just got Use Your Illusion II this past week - I've been rocking it out in my car. Really enjoying it. Not a bad song on that album either.
There's good songs to be sure on Use Your Illusion II, but I have to disagree with the statement that there isn't a bad song on it. I personally can't stand "Get in the Ring" and "Shotgun Blues." "My World" is also a waste of space and never dug "So Fine." Mostly my problem with both UYI albums is that they're over-produced. It was amusing when Axl slipped in that "Yowza!" at the end of "Mr. Brownstone" on Appetite but there's so many dumb little interjections on several songs on UYI it can drive me crazy at times.

I didn't say it rock's last great album, but rock's last masterpiece. Nothing has had the same importance to the genre as a whole since. Nirvana's Nevermind may have been more popular, but it was just Beatles hooks with teenage angst. Very much a case of right place, right time.

Sure, those songs aren't my favorites, but I dig Shotgun Blues. I could see Get in the Ring getting on my nerves if I wasn't in the right mood. My World is more of an outro than a song so I didn't really have that in mind. So Fine is ok. Definitely one of the weaker songs on there.

Song for song Appetite wins, but UYI II is still great to me.

I don't care for any of the bands you mentioned

But that songs is about Bob Gucchisomething Jr, he was a writer for Rolling stones. I think his dad is the creator of Penthouse too. That was a slap in the face too him. I loved that song! He talk a lot of **** about GNR and that was Axel getting back at him. Coma and beating a dead horse are my favorite. Even the song they did with Alice Cooper was good too. Dust N Bones is a great song too and Izzy sang and wrote that song too. But that has a cool beat and the words are classic too. Listen too it in case you never have.
