Hated ID. Too many goofy moments for it to be a legitimate sci-fi flick. Judd Hirsch's Jewish accent was brutal. Jeff "The Fly" Goldblum is always forgettable. Randy Quaid's "up yourrrrrrs" cheapened the movie. No thanks.

Great. Two more movies of Will Smith cliche's:

Independence Day was good, but it could have been SOOOOOOOO much better without overdosing on all the ridiculous shtick.

That's my reason for hating it. The first half was great.
But then seeing Will Smith punch out an alien and then watching a bunch of dust-cropping farmers get into military jets and shoot down aliens, I was like, "Check please!".

And don't even get me started on Jeff Goldblum's uber-cliched and stereotypical Jewish dad. I wanted to puke everytime he spoke. "You'd all be dead without my David!"

Or how about this alien race, which is technologically superior, being undone by a 3.5 inch floppy with a virus uploaded on it?

But I think my favorite schtick moment was when Randy Quad gets in a jet and yells "I'm back!".
At that moment I realized what the director was going for. He was probably envisioning a theater someplace filled with beer swilling, sleeveless rednecks yelling "YAHOOOOO! U.S.A.! U.S.A.!" when that line was dropped

If the movie wanted to be campy and overly ridiculous I wish it would have acted that way the whole time. Maybe throw Leslie Nielsen in there to add some comedy.
But it was taking itself seriously and it ruined the movie for me.

And now they want to make not one, but two more?
I can see the title's now - "Independence Day 2: Ah, Hell NO!" & "Independence Day 3: I Make Dis Movie Look Good!"

I was 12 when Independence Day came out so of course I loved it. Haven't watched it in nearly a decade, so my memory is a little vague of the entire thing. I remember the shtick a few of you are pointing out, and for a 12 year old boy it was perfect for me. I know for a fact that my attitudes towards movies has changed greatly, as I am much more of a "movie-snob" now. That said, I would probably watch a sequel to this. I'm sure it will be in 3D as well...can't have a massive blockbuster and not make it in 3D nowadays.

As long as they don't make a Wild Wild West sequel I will be thrilled...that movie sucked. Wasn't much of a fan of MIB2 either...or Seven Pounds and Hancock. Meh, Seven Pounds was such a beating to get through. With a cast like that, how did they fail so bad...horrible story telling imo.

You hit it spot on but those were the times. The movie was incredibly corny but entertaining.

I can see them making the movie a little more edgy for the sequel however. Terminator, Die Hard, and Indiana Jones all benefitted from long layoffs and I can see this going the same way.

Roland has become a better director since then, 2010 the Day after tomorrow cut down on the comedy elements. I expect a more complete disaster flick.

Haven't seen 2010 but The Day After Tomorrow was terrible, imo. The scene with the wolves or whatever was just ridiculous and added nothing to the movie. Only saw it once, in the theaters, so maybe if I saw it again my opinion would change...but probably not. Marijuana didn't even save that movie for me.

That's what made it a good movie. It wasn't supposed to be some series dramatic action movie. It was a cliche, over the top action flick; and it was great for it.

It would have been worse if they had laid off all the shticks; they're what made the movie what it was.

good points on the good and the bad. I happen to like goldbloom though.

Will Smith has evolved into a fantastic actor imo. As a former actor and current director (small-time of course) I'd love to work with him because he has become a versatile dramatic actor.

I think an Independence Day sequel if it was done seriously could be good. Will is older and more talented and can show much more vulnerability, so if the sequel kind of grew up with him I'd be down.

Will Smith has had quite an interesting career if you look at all the movies he's done (genres, roles etc.)

what I think is BS is his son in a Karate Kid remake! (can't we allow some classics to stay classics?) Just make a new movie with a similar premise if you absolutely must. You can't compete with Mr. Miyagi and Daniel Larusso and of course the Cobra Kai "sweep the leg"
