Re: The Black Keys -- Brothers 5-18-10

I've been listening to Tighten Up, Next Girl, Howlin For You, The Go Getter, and Sinister Kid nonstop.

as a whole, im about to make at least 3 plays on each song.

I'm in love with the breakdown at 1:04 on The Go Getter and at the end of Tighten Up (I don't think that's a breakdown, but it's still awesome).
And may thy spirit live in us, Forever LSU

I agree. I've probably listened about 4 or 5 times now and with every listen, the CD gets better and better (this is typical of just about every CD I listen to).

To me, the first four songs are pure awesome. My favorite track might be #1. It just sets the tone for the whole album. I knew instantly that his album was going to be different than the others. Next Girl and Tighten Up are just catchy as hell. And Howlin' is howlin'. Ten Cent Pistol and Unknown Brother might be my #2 and #3 favorites.

Sometimes it's worrisome when bands put 13, 14 or 15 tracks on a disk, because you end up with several songs that are just filler and don't match the quality of the others, but everything these guys touch is gold as far as I'm concerned and this one is no exception.

Sounds like alot of us have the same favorite group of songs, which says something for those particular songs. I'm right with whoever said the first four songs are awesome. I wish the whole cd could have followed that same energy. I also agree that Ten Cent Pistol and Unknown Brother are top notch songs as well. Overall, I think this cd gets 4 stars out of 5 compared to most other music,3 out 5 when compared to cds like Rubber Factory and Thickfreakness. I know it's not fair to compare cds to previous efforts, as each effort is its own entity, but the lack of energy compared to those efforts is what makes this disc less appealing. The song writing itself is still top notch though.

I actually like this album moreso than Rubber Factory to be honest. Rubber Factory is great, but that's when they started polishing their production without really changing their style. I wouldn't say this album is without energy, even compared to Thickfreakness. Its tempo might not be quite as high, but there's a good bit of bangers on Brothers.

They were also on Fallon the following night.

This is exclusive as it wasn't played on the air.

They played "Howlin'" on the air and then played "Next Girl" as the credits played, but those aren't on youtube.

I'm really lagging on picking their new CD up. I still listen to their old stuff a lot, but just haven't had the desire to spend my money on the album yet. Now that I got a new job it will be one of my first purchases after I get paid next Tuesday...followed by an oil change.

AFter extended listening sessions its a good album, but something about it stops me from putting it in the upper tier of Black Keys works. Though Sinister Kid (and you can't tell me thats not a funk song), She's Long Gone and Black Mud are up there with any other Keys song they've made.

I like it for the variety and that aspect puts it above Rubber Factory and Attack & Release for me. Thickfreakness is still my favorite of theirs, but depending on my mood I could see myself choosing Brothers over Thickfreakness.

After several listen thrus, I'm really liking Brothers. At first I wasn't sure but it has grown on me. The only song I can't get into is Go Getter. I would personally put it #4 right now behind #1 Attack and Release, 2 Rubber Factory, and 3 Magic Potion for me. I like all their Cds though. Well, except for Chulahoma (sp?). For some reason could never get into that one. Just seemed so abstract and different from anything else they've done.

Man Chulahoma is my #1. I listen through it in its entirety like 2-3 times a week. Its not for everyone though. Thickfreakness is up there as well more-so than attack and release

Its not their songs the Black Keys are playing on that one. Classic Junior Kimbrough blues covers.

Bingo. Great album, but it is not their original material. I'm also a big fan of The Big Come Up. Some great tunes on that one. Then of course Thickfreakness, Rubber Factory, Attack and Release, and everything else.

Finally got around to picking up Brothers a few days ago and have been able to give it about two full listens on my way to and from work. Having already heard Next Girl and Tighten Up before purchasing this, on my first play-through I was a little skeptical around the time I was 5 or 6 tracks in. This definitely has a different feel than some of their other material, even more so than Attack and Release. I think that the album closes very well, as I am a big fan of the last remaining tracks, including Unknown Brother. My second play-through I came around a bit more on some of the other tracks that were making me wonder about the direction they were taking.

I'm sure that as I listen to this more and more it will certainly grow on me. They are really implementing a lot of new sounds, vocally and instrumentally, that make this record standout a bit more than their raw guitar/drum albums. This album is also a huge send-off to Patrick Carney's messed up relationship with his ex-wife. Many of these songs and themes are generated through the emotions Carney felt personally, and what Dan Auerbach saw in his band mate and "brother". I'll be jamming on this one for a while, but I would love to see the Keys come back to their roots here on their next album, although whatever direction they take, I will follow.

Well, that explains why Chulahoma sounds so different then. Maybe I just need to give it a few more playthroughs then. Never gave it much of a chance. I was late to the club as far a becoming a Black Keys fan. First CD was Attack and Release. Liked it so much I quickly went out and got every CD by them about a year ago. So that's why Chulahoma got put on the backburner for awhile. As far as Brothers go, Sinister Kid is quickly becoming my favorite song. Love the sound and lyrics to this.
