You cannot make a MK movie without Scorpion saying "Get over here."

That's like the recent Die Hard movie without Bruce Willis swearing every second.

        It's Mortal Kombat.

How exactly would it not be corny?

You have to admit in that clip that the manner in which the footage was shot and the little bit of character development that showed (pretend for a second that you knew nothing of the game or the past movie debacles), some attempts were made as having it be a combo-genre movie of a serious nature. But once you start throwing in catch phrases of a game or comic book nature..... you enter the campy realm. Why go to the extent visually that he did only to detract from it with forced sound bites. Even at the end when they revealed Scorpion, then faded out with a "get over here"..... if I had never knew of anything MK, I would still be confused as to what that meant or how it fit.

Clearly, its not intended for those unfamiliar with Mortal Kombat. I got a chuckle out of the "Get Over Here!" sound bite. To me, it tells me that the creators of the clip, while taking the project seriously, still acknowlege it is Mortal Kombat and there's always been a humor to the franchise that shouldn't be ignored. It did not suggest that they envision the Scorpion character running around harpooning people and shouting the line as he does it.

"Get over here" is Mortal Kombat.

It is the only move that every person who remotely knows Mortal Kombat knows.

When Mortal Kombat comes up in a conversation, somebody will say "get over here."

Is it cheesy? Obviously. However that comes with the source material whose only claim to fame was blood and gore. Mortal Kombat would not be Mortal Kombat without cheese and part of that cheese is someone yelling "Mortal Kombat", "finish him", and "get over here."

I cant deal with Sub zero looking like Mr.Freeze tho

They can pull him off differently, there's a science to everything...Heck he could be known for using liquid nitrogen or something to that degree..

yea I kno liquid nitrogen will not freeze a human but you can bend the rules a lil bit, heck they already did with reptile and the new Batman series even bended rules...

Also, it's a short trying to show that the director can make a Mortal Kombat movie so he needs to throw that stuff in there just to show he knows the source material.

If I went any bigger, it would not have properly fit with my equipment, so I had to optimize. I'm okay with it, but I also know what I'm missing with those five inches. :)

I'll go ahead and say it...

...I will not see this movie, no matter how cool it looks, if "Get over here" is not in it. As Cebby said, that one line is Mortal Kombat to me and brings me back to my childhood more than any other single video game line.

Exclusive Interview with MORTAL KOMBAT: REBIRTH Director Kevin Tancharoen; Learn How Short Film Came Together and What He Wants to do in a Feature!

                        Some highlights

                        * They shot the short film over two days on two RED cameras
                        * Started in early April and it took 2 months to do the post production. Most people donated their time. The short was made for $7,500
                        * Knew if he was going to get a chance at a genre picture, he’d have to show he could do it on his own. This is a calling card for a chance at making the next Mortal Kombat feature film and it’s his vision for how he’d do it.
                        * No one at any studio knew he was doing the short
                        * Oren Uziel wrote the short. He’s currently listed on IMDb to write the next Mortal Kombat movie at Warner Bros.
                        * Says he wants to make a movie that balances the real world with the mysticism and the special powers. Compares it to the way Harry Potter exists in two worlds. As in there are two universes that coexist with each other.
                        * Confirms “fatalities” are definitely in his movie. He wants to put them in the tournament in an “organic way”
                        * Definitely would use “get over here” (the classic line from the game)
                        * Michael Jai White plays Jax Briggs in the short and he’d definitely be a part of the feature.
                        * Says Scorpion is the bad guy and will stay a bad guy
                        * They only had 4 hours to shoot the big fight scene

I’m very, very happy that people are responding well to it. I know that there’s definitely a handful of purists that have their opinions on the mysticism and the mythos of Mortal Kombat. But I do have an answer for that: this is just a prelude to what my movie version would be. And of course, when you’re working by yourself, you have a limited resource of budget. I made this thing for $7,500. I couldn’t go balls-to-the-wall on visual effects. I had to utilize what I could and make the best of it. I want the mysticism to be treated carefully and with integrity.
We just kind of went for it, and did it. And everyone was available, they believed in the project. We picked up the camera, and we went, and we didn’t stop.

                            Silly side story...

Bear in mind this took place back in the VHS days..., A buddy of mines roomate sabotaged a couple of his boot leg copy porn tapes that he kept leaving in the common living room (which kept enraging the roomates girlfriend) by splicing out the "money" shots with Mortal Kombat's "Finish Him!" and the fatalities.

I thought that was really funny back then.
