The only way Dish can compete with DirecTV in the number of HD channels department is if they count their PPV channels.
DTV includes 38 PPV channels in that list, so the count is really 126-122 and even then you just have to look at what channels you might prefer because there are a lot that the other doesn't have.

I think that other list is DTV PR or a disgruntled custmer trying a little smear campaign, I know 2, 3 and 4 are false.

And the 15 PPV channels for Dish are included as well. So if you don't include them at all you see DirecTVs would be 125 or so and Dish would be 107.

As for those 2,3 and 4 being false, that post i copied from was at the end of 2008, maybe some of that stuff has been fixed by now.

I like my Directv , but my advice is to go directly through them not a sub contractor i got screwed because guy told me i couldn't get hd with my location so i changed packages. next dude comes out and tells me it wouldn't have been a problem. the guy didn't want to do the work because my house is big. but my house was rewired by comcast so all my rooms get there reception from a junction box in my basement . took the dude like 30 minutes to install in 6 rooms

I tried for years, purchasing three TV antennae, to get reliable local TV reception; to no avail. I could not get the Dish second roof top receiver because of my neighbor’s trees.

          2. DirecTV includes local channels in their price. You pay extra with Dish.

          3. DirecTV HD DVR will record two HD channels at once. Dish records two channels at once, but only one is HD.

          4. DirecTV receiver stays on if you leave it on. If the Dish receiver is left on, the picture is replaced in the middle of the night with an annoying Dish logo on the screen. So, if you want to record a Dish recorded program to your VCR or DVD during that period, your program is replaced with the Dish logo.

          5. DirecTV has at least two weeks of programming information on their system. Dish programming is limited to one week.

          6. DirecTV DVR has output options for HDMI, component and two analog AV outputs that operate simultaneously. Dish has HDMI, component and one analog.
          1. I don't have two dishes... I did hear about this, but don't know what circumstances would require it.

          2. They don't charge for locals anymore, it appears... mine is rolled into the $54.99 I pay for the Top 200 and HD (no charge, since they went free HD a few months ago).

          3. This isn't true, I have a receiver that I got almost a year ago now and it records both shows in HD... last night I recorded MasterChef and Chopped at the same time, and both were in HD.

          4. People still tape stuff with a VCR when they have DVR? I guess that's a problem, if you're some weirdo who regularly uses a VCR... I for one, am not. Also, I think you can change your power options to not have the standby screen come up...

          5. Again, not true -- I can page through and get at least 2 weeks of programming... seems the same to me.

          6. Didn't notice the difference in inputs... mine does everything I need it to, and I dunno why anyone would need 2 damn analog outputs in the HD age in addition to their HD ones

Just my .02 as a Dish customer in case people were taking those as gospel.

              Agreed again

Im not sure what the lineup list is for that D* gave, but none of those are reasons to consider one over the other anyhow.

Its really not a big enough difference to wail over.

Those are some huge reasons IMO to choose one over the other but of course if they're not true then it's a moot point.

As for #1, obviously there is something to that or DirecTV wouldn't be running tons of ads about it now without being sued.

If you live in a place totally surrounded by trees, there may be a separate thing you need to have to get "visual" on the sattelite. I've never heard of anyone having to have two dishes on their house though, and my brother installed those things for about 4 years. The only time there would be multiple dishes is when people had SUPER old ones and needed multiple receivers but didn't want to remove the old dishes.

Not necessarily false though 23, perhaps you're fortunate enough to live in an area where it's not required.

Direct does not offer more hd than dish.

they both go out when it rains.

                        1. Being that I work for Dish I can say that someone would need two dishes if they have no line of sight to a particular satellite, Mainly for International + american packages (very rare). Also trees (majority).
                        2. Dish locals are included in all packages. fact
                        3. Dish dvr dual tuners can record both in hd. fact.
                        4. You can disable this feature if you wanted. But who has a vcr?
                        5. 10 day program guide
                        6. why would someone need hdmi and any other type of output

                          Re: DIRECTV or Dish?

I'm looking to swtich from DTV to Dish as we speak. My contract expires in about a month.

After all is said and done, I pay $90 for DTV and get:
Choice Package HD with DVR - 79.99
                          2 SD receivers $5 each

It's $95+ after taxes. I figure I can get about the same TV lineup through Dish with 2 HD DVR's and 1 HD receiver and pay about $15 less for the first year and $5 less after that. They're currently offering free HD for life as long as you sign up for paperless billing and auto debit, which is what I do anyway.

For the most part, I am but at the same time... its not even close enough to make it a statement as if this is what we all deal with, when its not.

You dont even hear people discussing 2 dishes anymore

It seems after my dealings with DTV that they just wanted a contract...they lied initially that a bundle package (TV/Internet/Phone) could be provided as they don't have any ISPs that gives them any rebates, then it went from a $90 total for all 3 packages to $150 ($90 for DTV and $50 for internet/phone with Windstream). It seemed every person I talked to told me something different so that immediately turns me off...if you're giving me issues at the get-go, Lord knows what it would be like for the duration of the term.

Dish can provide all 3 for $120 per month. My biggest gripe was MLB Network which the lady said while they're having a contract dispute, she can add the channel for free if I ask...I find that kindly odd but okay, I'll take it.

They're coming Saturday morning to set it all up so we'll see. If I'm not mistakened there wil be only 1 box to handle all 4 TVs in my house and installation is free compared to $20 w/DTV. I've got the 200 channel package with almost every sports channel added except for MLB Extra Innings and NFL Ticket which means nothing anyways. I really hope they offer PeachTree TV so I can watch my Braves game like I do currently on cable but that might be a sacrifice I'll have to take.

Then why the new ad campaign I wonder by DirecTV showing the 2 dish issue? It seems odd they'd choose to put forth that issue if it's practically non-existent and Dish could call them on the falsehood of it.
