      Re: Amazon Kindle

Thanks guys, just ordered. The reason I was asking about the power is they sell a US to Australian power adaptor but that's only for plugging into a wall socket which i won't need if i can charge with the USB port. I think it's something like 40 bucks which is a rip off considering the whole kindle is only $139.

Do you guys have any trouble reading PDF documents on it?

        Re: Amazon Kindle

I love, love, LOVE mine. My wife bought one for me for Christmas and I've read it every day since.

I have newspapers again, have read several books, and have noticed only minor hiccups (some formatting issues and spelling errors, particularly in the LOTR). The battery life is nice, and even with reading for long hours and using the light in the Amazon case at night, I can get 2-3 weeks on a single charge if I only turn on the wireless to download the current issues. If I leave the wi-fi on, though, I get only a week or so...but I am a heavy reader so your mileage may vary.

EDIT: One thing to add, is that Amazon released an update about a month ago that adds page numbers and also changed the formatting for periodicals making things much easier to navigate.

Yeah...I'm just stupid and always leave it on even when I put it down for a couple mins.

I've admittedly only read one, but it was fine. You just might have to zoom parts of it (though if it's just a book then you'll be fine).

I'd also checkout Project Gutenberg, which offers up the free e-books in every format imaginable. The only thing that sucks is that some titles have multiple versions so you have to check them out. When I read 'A Christmas Carol' the version I downloaded free off the Kindle Store didn't have any illustrations, and then I found one at Gutenberg that had identical text and pictures.

So can you download an ebook directly from project gutenberg to Kindle? or do you have to use a computer to transfer it?

Thanks for the info Johnny! A buddy of mine was telling me if the book is relatively old (he could remember when exactly the date cutoff was) then you can D/L the book from Amazon for free. Looks like i'll be catching up on some of the classics.

Yea, thanks to all for the information in here. probably going to pull the trigger on this and then use swagbucks to pay for books. If you dont know what swagbucks are and are interested, you should send me a PM so I get the referral :-) lol

Btw, not entirely sure if that is spamming, mods, but I apologize if it is.

I think you need a PC...I just downloaded the Kindle version to my desktop and dragged them to the Kindle.

                          Thanks for the answer.

Also, for anyone interested amazon announced a cheaper Kindle that has sponsored screensavers and a message on the bottom of the home page for 114 dollars that releases on May 3. As I am writing a thesis and that is around the time I graduate I am going to wait and get that. I wouldnt get $25 dollars of use out of it (around 35$ if i went to Best Buy with tax) in the next month. It also comes with special offers that randomly appear. As usual, there is more info on amazon.

                            Re: Amazon Kindle

I saw that today, it sounds like a great deal. I wouldn't mind if I had screensavers (which only appear after 10mins or when you go stand-by) that had a New York Times logo, or someone's novel, or what have you. Odds are they'll be sponsored by the big sellers on the Kindle anyway...I highly doubt you'll see a Pepsi screensaver or an advert for Jersey Shore on MTV.

EDIT: Well I should have waited and hunted for the press release. Proctor & Gamble, GM, VISA, and a few others are some of the early advertisers. I guess it's "perfect", but still it's a hell of a deal.

Cool, that was about to be my next question: How long until the screen saver pops up. Just wanted to make sure that it was not excessive. And I know 25 dollars is not huge, but for some reason $114 sounds MUCH easier on the wallet than $139.

I did read about other advertisers and edited my post above. I wouldn't call it a deal breaker, but you will have to see some crap.
