Re: Plasma or LCD? - The TV Thread
I have put off upgrading from my 7 year old Samsung 32" lcd to a much larger 1080p for a while. My fiancé surprised me with a XBOX One for my birthday a couple of weeks ago so now I need to take the plunge and need some help.
I don't need 3d or smart capability. I would ideally like a 60" tv. I would be gaming on the One, of course, and watch mostly sports, and Netflix, HBO GO etc. I would like to spend $500-$900. I have $300 in amazon gift cards so it would be nice to purchase through them. However, I am open to buying from a store and do have a CostCo membership.
I have been eying the Samsung PN60F5300 and its Costco counterpart for a while. I worry about the lighting in my living room. It's not terribly bright, but worry about performance during the day especially for college football. We are also likely moving next year so who knows what the house would be like. The input lag is supposed to be not too great on this model, but I am not sure if I would really notice it. I do play some first-person shooters, though. And I am a little worried about breaking the tv in because I teach and work a second job so August will be a really busy time. I think I will get impatient with breaking it in. I would like to go with a plasma if the lighting is not an issue because the price is just much better for what I would be getting in size and picture quality. I would love to do the H5000 or 8500 series but think they're just out of my price range.
I have looked at the Vizeo E0i series as they seem to review well because of quality and price.
What do you guys think? I would like to purchase one in the next 2-6 weeks. I am hoping some decent sales arise with Labor Day/Football approaching.Comment

The Vizio E series is a good TV but has a LED Flaw with its local dimming setting. The LED's fluctuate during certain scenes during shows. It's weird to explain but is very visible. I owned it for about 1 week and had to return it.
The Samsung Plasma is actually a pretty bright display. It's not as bright as an LED but it does a good job. The screen is reflective which may cause an issue.
If you looking LED for gaming, give SHARP a look. They offer nice TV's with good input lag for gaming.
Samsung LED are good to, but their input lag is not great, though they claim renaming your gaming source to PA helps tremendously.
I am hoping to confirm this by eye this weekend on my Samsung E8000

Optoma HD131Xe 1080p 2500 Lumen Full 3D DLP Home Theater Projector
Anyone have this projector? I'm "this" close to pulling the trigger on it. I have about 10' of space, potentially more, to work with for throw distance.Twitter - WTF_OS

Re: Plasma or LCD? - The TV Thread
The light shouldn't be an issue for college football or any other watching during the day. Unless you just have a window with no blinds directly behind your couch. My parents have a Samsung plasma. They have 3 windows (with blinds) and a door that is a full window (no blind) behind the TV. A skylight that shines light directly on the couch, and a front door with a small window that leaks light into the room. Now if you are watching a movie where it's primarily dark or takes place at night you might have to think twice about it. I just put a towel in the door and cover up any windows that don't have blinds.Comment

Thanks for the quick replies guys. What about breaking in the plasma? What would the longterm effects be in terms of picture quality and longevity if I didn't truly break it in?Comment

Re: Plasma or LCD? - The TV Thread
However, it is not required that you use color slides. Those are used for two reasons: 1) uniformity prior to getting your set professionally calibrated; 2) guarantee of full 16:9 usage of the set while you're not watching it. So you can still use them overnight to run through some hours if you'd like, but otherwise it's kind of nice to just ignore such concepts and enjoy your TV.
That said, my Samsung D7000 had a bit of IR at one point and it's now gone. My F8500 gets temporary IR pretty immediately, but wears off pretty quickly as well. One neat trick is you can use the 1:1 (screen fit) option time to time, then the overscanned 16:9 option every so often, and then at the very least you won't have "those static images" in the exact same places if you work them around here and there. A lot of small things which can remedy IR. Meanwhile, I'd say just enjoy the set while watching it and then take preventative measures while not watching it.Samsung PN60F8500 PDP / Anthem MRX 720 / Klipsch RC-62 II / Klipsch RF-82 II (x2) / Insignia NS-B2111 (x2) / SVS PC13-Ultra / SVS SB-2000 / Sony MDR-7506 Professional / Audio-Technica ATH-R70x / Sony PS3 & PS4 / DirecTV HR44-500 / DarbeeVision DVP-5000 / Panamax M5400-PM / Elgato HD60Comment

Thanks for the feedback. What do you guys think about open boxed items from Best Buy? They have the Vizio M651d-A2R open boxed without remote for a really good price.Comment

Re: Plasma or LCD? - The TV Thread
It should be the manufacturer's warranty. This item is priced below $900 and sells on amazon for over $1,600. That is a crazy deal but makes me wonder if there is something seriously wrong with it. Best Buy labels it as "Good" and just missing the remote and manual. I have been really thinking about going for a plasma, but this could be a great find.Comment

Re: Plasma or LCD? - The TV Thread
Well it sounds great. It might be discounted because it's a last year model and open box. If you don't see any problems and you can get a extended warranty, it sounds great! But if you can't do those things, walk away. Research it good before you invest in a TV.Boy this habit is as bad as dope!!!

Re: Plasma or LCD? - The TV Thread
I went by Best Buy today, and it is the floor model. The associate also couldn't find the tv's stand. With it being a display, I am really hesitant. It is an amazing deal though. I didn't ask about an extended warranty but read that their warranties are about $300 for 5 years.
I think I may wait and grab the Samsung plasma from CostCo.Comment
