LCD or OLED? - The TV Thread

I know why movies in hdr have looked dark on the S95b. I connected the new Apple TV 4K to it and for some reason HDR isn’t working properly. It says it’s playing in hdr but the image isn’t getting brighter. I tried restarting the Apple TV many times and nothing helps. My hdmi cables are 2.1, but I’ll try different ones tonight.

Do you have the Apple TV set to 4K SDR?

Iirc, when I purchased my Apple TV 4K recently, it was set to force Dolby Vision out of the box. I had to go into settings and add/confirm all of the different formats and their respective refresh rate’s manually.

From there, I set it to 4K SDR and turned on the setting to match content. The match content feature doesn’t work entirely as expected unless you have it set this way. For example, if you set it to 4K HDR or Dolby Vision, it won’t match content when you fire up SDR content, it will force HDR or DV on non HDR/DV content and the result is often less than ideal.

My Roku was forcing everything into DV and it made live sports in particular on YTTV look terrible on the C2. But I found the setting on the Roku so that it will use whatever is supported and all is well now.

HDR on my old TV looked terrible on the PS4 Pro/PS5 so I had to turn it off. So nice to have it on now. Looks great.

Yea, I set it up like I have my other one on my c1. I put it in 4k SDR and match content. Even when I enable HDR in the settings it still doesn’t get bright at all. It really doesn’t make any sense.

Is there an adaptive brightness setting? I think my other Samsungs have something like that or check eco mode.

You should be able to get a price match if you chat.

Was on chat with a Best Buy agent earlier and they talk like they won't be able to price match whatever EPP discount I get from work on Samsung. Asked if I would have to pack it up and return it then by again to get the deal. Don't have the box and really not wanting to go through all that.

Also thinking about getting a sound bar...any suggestions?

I'll just say that I'm very picky with soundbar sound, in that a lot of them sound very filtered (not much to come out from) and a lot of them with wireless/Bluetooth capabilities don't have very good lipsync control with certain televisions, at least older plasmas like mine that have a lot of input lag.

Anyway, after extended testing with several products, I personally finally landed on the Samsung HW-Q70R (bought this back in 2019). This was great for my situation, and sounded like how I needed it to sound.

I'm sure there are many better midrange soundbars that have come out since then though, and most of my setups are on the home theater front except this one room. Somebody else could probably recommend something better for your needs.

What’s midrange soundbar pricing these days?

I never know what to recommend family and friends that ask… I’m always tempted to just tell people to buy a receiver and start with a 3.1 system. It sounds so much better and can be better used for music if needed.

I figured $400 - $700 is midrange, but I don't really know. Anyone who is spending $1500+ for a soundbar should really only do it if a 3.1 HT setup is spatially incompatible or aesthetically unpleasing (EDIT: or would like a cheaper Atmos alternative).

I would say $200-400 is mid range. Then you have the higher quality stuff going up to the $700s. At that point there is no reason.

I got another Sonos Beam as it had Black Friday discount plus a 25% cash back offer so got it for a lot less. I have those in 2 bedrooms so just staying with the ecosystem.

I picked up the LG S90QY the other day and added the wireless rears for it and have no complaints so far at least. I admittedly haven't used it a ton but did throw on Saving Private Ryan on 4k and it sounded phenomenal.

My 43 inch sony just crapped out. I guess i can work on it but I think i'm just gonna get a cheap TCL. I use it to go above my monitors so I can watch sports/netflix while i'm at my computer and use it to display temps/music app while I'm gaming.

Don't really need more than 60hz as I don't 4k game or have a new gen console yet.

Does Dolby vision make a different on a smaller size tv like 43? I can get a 50 inch at the same price and the only difference is the 50 doesn't have Dolby vision or I can get a cheaper 43 without Dolby vision.

To me, Dolby Vision is like framerate: no matter the resolution or screen size, you'll notice the difference.

The only question is whether you want/like Dolby Vision or a TV of that size outputs the amount of nits that you'd like for DV to take hold as much as it can.
