    Thanks

I didn't know if saying a retailers name might be against the rules.

I got the color figured out, just playing around with it.

    Cheers

Just pulled the trigger on the Vizio M65C1, Got it on amazon for $970 (used, pristine condition but no remote, bought the remote for $12). Set up my delivery for the day after our move is complete. Next up to buy is the Surround sound!

Plasma or LCD? - The TV Thread

Well a few weeks ago I noticed a small thin vertical line on my 2010 Plasma LG. Talked to the guys at Best Buy and he said my panel is going out. With the cost of TV's now so low I might as well go ahead and pick one up. I feel like I'm on borrowed time now.

I'm looking at either LG/Vizio. At least 55 inches. Trying to stay within the $500-$700 range. I don't game on my tv since I've switched to playing on a monitor(no way in hell would I switch back to playing on a tv)

Can one of you experts send me some recommendations?

So I finally got around to wall mounting my M60 and I ran into some unforeseen issues.

First, I attempted to route the cables internally into the wall to make for a clean mount. That was when I discovered it was impossible for me to do this without removing a large dry wall section.

The house was built with "fire stops", this was a means to supposedly stop the spread of fire from one section to the next. Basically its a 2x4 running horizontal across the 16" on center studs. Soooo this means no cords hidden in the wall!

            Fire stop example

So now, I'm left with hopefully disguising the wires with a "flat-ish" wire cover. I'm thinking something like this might work.

If you paint the cover it'll look good enough.

Also, for fire code, the power can't run behind the wall directly...you have to have a special plug at top and bottom or something....that made me just dangle mine cause i'm lazy lol

Any have recommended picture settings for a Samsung model #: un40h5003afxza?
EA and 2k have the unfortunate task of trying to balance on a tightrope of fun and sim while trying not to fall 10,000 feet to their death. Instead of a safety net waiting down below there will just be angry customers quick to move out of the way and talk of their failure.

I got nothing for your set in particular, but all Samsung televisions in the HT market since about 2008 have had notorious things to keep an eye out for/avoid. Here are a few:

                  - Find Movie mode. It unlocks the most calibration tools of any setting. Get out of Dynamic mode ASAP before you start to tell yourself that "it is already a good picture." It ain't!

                  - Movie mode should already do this for you, but find Warm 2 color temp. It's the closest to 6500K (Rec. 709 standard) on all Samsung sets.

                  - Backlight/Cell Light is your own personal setting and should be the last thing you care about, it's all personal taste and based on your lighting conditions in your room. However, when calibrating start it at 20. Go down from there if you feel you need/must.

                  - Avoid going over 95 for contrast. Most Samsung sets are notorious for pinking clipped whites at that point.

                  - Brightness is as follows: Put on a movie with black bars at the top and bottom and shadows that interact with the bars. With all lights out, start by setting the Brightness nob higher, around 60 or so. You should see what is known as dithering (more prominent on plasma screens, it's seeing little flickering green pixels in dark areas). Lower it one notch at a time until you don't see any dithering. This is the max brightness you should use. Now keep lowering it until your shadow detail "bleeds" with the black bars, where they are one the same. The step above it is the lowest you should use. Decide between that range, which should not be that big.

                  - If you're setting it for Blu-rays, get Sharpness down to 0. Period. If you need extra "crispness" to your picture, go get yourself a DarbeeVision Darblet (though for a 40" set, that's probably not worth it).

                  - Keep color swimming around 50. I've never gone higher than 50 before myself, and have gone as low as 46 (I'm normally between 48-50 depending on the set, and I have owned over seven plasma sets in the past decade).

                  - Keep tint at 50/50. If there are colorization issues it is not in the tint, but in the white balance. Find that setting in Picture Options, and play with that. This is where you want to find calibration settings though, but each TV is different. Play with it as best as you can, but there's a good chance they don't have to be touched too much. Try and not touch green at all, only red and blue. The gains adjust the bright part of the picture (similar to a contrast control), and the offsets adjust the dimmer parts of the picture (similar to the brightness control).

                  - If you have Dynamic Contrast, Black Levels, MPEG Noise Filter, NR Filter, Edge Enhancement, or anything like that on any setting other than OFF, turn it off immediately! The only exception is forbroadcasts, Dynamic Contrast at low is probably fair game. If your set has Black Optimizer, it may stay on. I leave mine on "Dark Room" regardless. Everything else will just crush blacks or destroy/soften your image and crap on your motion.

                  - For movies, Cinema Mode (under the Film Mode options) is a must. For broadcasts, Auto 1 is normally preferred, however Auto 2 is good for things with text on them, like a scrolling score ticker (it won't judder). It's likely you might not notice the differences if you aren't looking for them. Me? I have the videophile bug; I see things even when I don't want to. I see bad flicker on Blu-rays when Cinema Mode is not on. There are other things here and there that I just "know" at times. I wish I didn't. But hey, that's what we turn into I guess.

                  - Any other smoothing such as 120Hz/240Hz is something that I recommend you keep off, unless you like the soap opera effect. No matter what, LED/LCD technology has motion blur, something that I just hate (which is why I only go plasma now), so do with it as you will, and provided that all filters and processors are off it will not make them more pronounced, which is a plus.

Hope this helped! Not too many real numbers here, but definitely things that you should consider when calibrating. The big thing that you must realize is some things stay somewhat unchanged, and the biggest changes are in the White Balance. There is also the 10pt white balance, but leave that one off. Color... Mode? I think it's called. There should possibly be the Auto/Wide/Native options? Anyway, find the one that gives you what you want I suppose. Every calibrator changes it based on what is closest to the most accurate colors, or so it seems. Native would be preferred, but they wouldn't overcompensate something else if it ends up mucking with other controls too much.

                  God speed, sir!
