Re: The Avengers (May 4th, 2012)

Good God, what a movie. Though I was never really a big fan of the Avengers comics(with the exception of the Hulk), I enjoyed the **** out of this, possibly the finest comic film to date. I feel the bar has been set with this, with The Dark Knight Rises being the only film that will possibly match this anytime soon, and also why I feel rebooting Spider Man the same year of these two releases is a HUGE mistake, being only five years after the last film and could believe it or not, actually get lost in the shuffle.

I think everyone has pretty much summed up what makes the Avengers great, the acting, action and bits of humor throughout was spot on, and yes, the Hulk absolutely stole the show hands down. The best Hulk representation by far IMHO, Ruffalo was fantastic.

But I think the best thing about the film was that, as an aspiring filmmaker, I was very impressed with how these franchises were brought together after 4 years and five films almost seamlessly. I seriously had doubts about them pulling this off and thought it was too much a risk, but it paid off in huge dividends (literally) thanks to Whedon and the amazing performances. I can't wait to see these character continue on, especially after the end credits scene.

I agree on how it was all brought together. Especially for kids right now, I think it's great that my boys will have this to look back on and then set up a night where they watch them all together. I'll go ahead and say it's right up there with the first 3 Star Wars movies.
Being kind, one to another, never disappoints.

I think that might be why all of the jokes kind of stood out to me. It seemed like every major scene had some kind of joke in it (even the more serious scenes). For me at least, it took a little away from the movie.

I don't know if anyone reported, but The Avengers broke the opening weekend record. 200.3M in the first weekend.

Re: The Avengers (May 4th, 2012)

I saw it and thought it was great, as far as comic superhero movies go. It was light, fast on its feet, set a goal and stuck with it. Characters were well fleshed out, and all got their due time to shine (including Black Widow and Hawkeye).

I never did like the Thor connection with the Marvel universe (though it is a universe, after all), simply just because. It's no fault of theirs, and in fact he's the only one who presents enemies who can rise to a challenge against this newly alleged unit. The only other thing that's felt weird with all of these heroes is how "unbeatable" they all are. Not against their enemies in particular, but just against each other. I see Iron Man shooting his crap, Thor hammering people to oblivion, Hulk "smashing," and Captain America... doing his thing... and yet I don't really know what it all ends up meaning if they can't hurt each other in their least vulnerable states. It almost makes it feel like a wasted effort.

The last forty or so minutes would be worth multiple repeat viewings, as well as the consistent humor throughout the film. Definite 3D Blu-ray purchase although I didn't see it in 3D, and it completely stands well above the other Marvel films (possibly with the exception of the overall character arc in Iron Man 1).

Best laugh-out-loud moments (though they've been referenced in spoilers earlier as well)... I like how they're really spread out per character as well:

Only thing that bugged me about the movie was some of the CGI used towards the end.
