    Vinyl Collectors?

Any vinyl collectors out there? I've had an itch for the past couple of years to get into vinyl, but never really looked into it much other than shopping around for LPs.

I'm not sure exactly where to start looking or really know what to look for in a good record player, but I feel the time is coming when I will break down and buy one. For right now, I don't need stereo speakers or a receiver and would be listening through headphones (recommendations welcome there too), though I will of course welcome speaker and receiver recommendations. I would prefer something not too pricey, trying to stay under $400 if at all possible.

I haven't searched much, but found this Audio Technica on Amazon that has a pretty high rating.

    Thoughts?

Yea, I was just about to post that, 55. I started that thread, but it didnt really go anywhere. I had a much lower budget than you but I enjoy having one. Unlike most vinyl collectors, I mailnly get Hip Hop LPs which really makes it a bit different as most records are classic rock. Good Luck! and I would help more, but I really don't know too much about the topic other than I am interested in it!

How is that turntable holding up for you, Bigfoot?

It works, it is easy to use, and the sound is still nice, although I am not big an audiophile by any means and am running the sound through computer speakers. It was also nice that it came with all the cords and you dont have to use an am (which I understand is needed for some other turntables). I would def recommend it for the price.

I have some jazz albums with Joe Pass, some Dean Martin and Tony Bennet. I wouldn't say I'm a collector or expert at all. my wife bought me a simple all in one set that I use. It works fine for me.

I haven't bought anything in Vinyl in years. I have well over 200 underground hip hip albums from 98-04 and maybe another 150 random (ska , hip hop , punk , rock , house , ect ect all sitting in my basement. I really should get around to playing them all again some day.

I would buy all my records at the local mom and pops spot or Newbury Comics.

EBAY, Amazon, or Random record stores for me. The problem is that I listen to mostly hip hop and the stores around here are catered to rock enthusiasts.

Any gems in your underground HH collection, areobee?

My parents have a nice collection that I take from when I travel there. I also get some from the Goodwill here in our town.

                      Re: Vinyl Collectors?

The past two weekends I've gone "digging." The best place I've found so far is an antique mall that is about 5 minutes from where I work. There a little store inside that has a good size section of just vinyl. Yesterday, the guy at the counter told me there was a bunch in the back of the mall and they were all 2 bucks. I didn't go through them all, but managed flipped through a couple boxes and found a couple good ones there. There's also a nice little music store in town that I visited and found some good ones, there too. Still have some places I need to check out, but I figured antique malls would be ideal to hit up for vinyl.

This is what my collection is now:

Ryan Bingham - Mescalito, Junky Star
Danger Mouse & Daniele Luppi - Rome
Townes Van Zandt - Live at the Old Quarter, Houston, Texas
Junior Kimbrough - All Night Long
                      Smashing Pumpkins - Siamese Dreams
R.L. Burnside - Wish I Was In Heaven Sitting Down
                      Chuck Berry - Golden Decade
Sly & the Family Stone - Greatest Hits
Steve Miller Band - Fly Like An Eagle
                      Fleetwood Mac - Rumours
                      Jethro Tull - Heavy Horses
                      Stevie Wonder - Talking Book
                      Aretha Franklin - Lady Soul
The Ventures - Action TV themes (Batman, Get Smart, Green Hornet, etc)
CCR - 69 (Green River, Willy & the Poor Boys), 70 (Cosmo's Factory, Pendulum)
                      Madonna - Like A Virgin
Dire Straits - Brothers in Arms
Elton John - Goodbye Yellow Brick Road
                      E.T. Soundtrack
                      The Godfather soundtrack
                      Pink Floyd - The Wall

I wrote a blog about going to look for them if you guys want to check it out.

I listened to this last week while working out. Its fun listening to it and remembering what scenes are going on during the score.

Anyway fellas, I can O-fficially mark Thriller off my list. As soon as I saw it I couldn't let it go.

I own a VERY rare original In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3 (Coheed and Cambria) vinyl album because my girlfriend is awesome and bought it for $30 from a girl who had no idea what her store had. They regularly fetch upwards of $250 on eBay.

I own an original vinyl pressing of Miles Davis' Kind of Blue. Easily one of my favorite things I own, on top of the fact it's my favorite jazz albums. Nothing sounds better than the crackle and hiss of old vinyl.
