    Re: Vinyl Collectors?

This is my haul from this past Saturday:

Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here, Dark Side of the Moon
    Guns n Roses - Lies
Judas Priest - Screaming for Venegance
CCR - Green River, Cosmo's Factory
Sly & the Family Stone - There's A Riot Goin On
The Who - Won't Get Fooled Again
    Ozzy - Blizzard of Ozz
    Eric Clapton - Slowhand
Derek & the Dominoes - Layla & other Assorted Love Songs
The Beatles - Revolver and Sgt Pepper's
Bob Marley/The Wailers - Natty Dread, Burnin
    Steppenwolf - Steppenwolf

There were some things there that I wanted to purchase, but were kind of too expensive (Dead Kennedys, Ramones, Muddy Waters Complete Chess BoxSet!). There were also things there that given more time to think I should have gone after, such as a signed copy of Grand Funk Railroad's Closer To Home, a Pink Floyd DSOTM picture disk, and Piper at the Gate's of Dawn.

I wish I could find a source for 80s/early 90s records. I love classic rock, but I want to start finding some good 80s stuff like early grunge, punk, rap, rock, etc.

Went to a farmers market today, and found a tent with records.

      The Police - Synchronicity
      Fleetwood Mac - Rumors
      Journey - Greatest Hits

      $1 each.

        Anybody gotten anything good recently?

I haven't done much in the way of searching for old stuff, but I've been gradually acquiring some recent favorites of mine on vinyl, finally:

I listened to Endtroducing last night for the first time on vinyl. What a trip. The organ breakdown in Organ Donor sounded glorious.

I'm getting a table for Christmas and can't wait to start building my collection. I had my first child (son!) two weeks ago, so I envision it being something I share with him as he gets older and we both take part in it.

Fat Possum is having a $10 sale.

They have older Black Keys albums. Al Green, T. Rex, Townes Van Zandt, and other reissues. They're mostly a blues/soul label so get some nice country blues.

I have a fairly simple 5 channel Pioneer receiver and a really cheap record player and I'm looking to upgrade. It doesn't have a phono input, so I just use one of the red/white RCA inputs. Old Miles Davis and other jazz records sound pretty decent, but anything new sounds awful. I'm willing to put some money into it, but I don't know what I need. Do I need a receiver with a phono input, or do I just need a decent quality turntable with an amp or something?

What are you looking to replace?

I don't have mine connected to a receiver. Some turntables will have a preamp in them, but most of them will require some extra power. Mine did at least. So, I have my turntable, phono-amp, and speakers.

I wouldn't mind just hooking it up to my receiver so it can go through my sound system, but I'd also look at the other option, similar to what you have.

If you check the first couple of pages the links to my table and speakers should still be good. I'm sure there are more options out there, but I haven't really kept up with them since my purchase.

This is the hphono amp I bought. Its NIP anymore, but all I did was search for outside phono amps and went with the best reviewed ones after googling them.

Found a place in downtown LA that has a killer selection. Some of the cases may have a little wear, but all of the actual records that I picked up were in near perfect condition.

                        Magical Mystery Tour - $8
                        The Cars (album) - $4
                        Matthew Sweet - Inside - $2
RHPS (original cast) - $0.99 (the case was a wreck, but the vinyl was clean)

                          Re: Vinyl Collectors?

Here's my latest haul I got on my birthday weekend and albums I got for Christmas:

                          Record/antique shop:
                          Jethro Tull - Aqualung
                          The Beatles - Abbey Road
                          X - Los Angeles
                          Patti Smith Group - Easter
Prince & the Revolution - Purple Rain
                          B.B. King - Sweet 16 Greatest Hits
Sly & the Family Stone - There's A Riot Goin' On
                          Blind Faith - Blind Faith
                          Led Zeppelin I
                          Led Zeppelin III
Led Zeppelin - Houses of the Holy

                          Christmas:
                          Dead Weather - Horehound
Drive By Truckers - The Dirty South
                          Japandroids - Celebration Rock
Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeroes - Up From Below
Eagles of Death Metal - Heart On

The second side of Abbey Road is ridiculous. I feel like Brian Wilson must have lost whatever mind he had left once he heard that side of the album.

Heart On and Horehound both sound better on the vinyl mixes to me compared to digital. Sound is obviously fuller, but the vocals aren't nearly as compressed and pushed to the back (this is true for a lot of vinyls, though).

Yeah, it accounted for almost half of what I paid for all of those albums. Once I saw it I could not let it go as its one of my favorite albums already. The vinyl is free of scratches and sounds great. That rockabilly-punk edge really cuts through the speakers. The cover and t-shirt offer insert are in great shape.

I go to this antique mall/emporium every couple of months in Strasburg, VA. The owner guarantees them to work and typically has any inserts that came with the album intact. I've never really come across anything dingy or "crappy" while looking there.

He's had Holiday in Cambodia in there every time I go in, but I keep balking at the price.

I wish I could find a local antique place that had rap albums, but considering my area I'm not surprised I haven't found any yet.

That's awesome. There's a flea market here every week off of Melrose, and there's a guy with some killer vinyl in great condition, but like you said, the price usually drives me away. I did get the Clash's self-titled for $20. It was a first edition, and in near-mint condition (sleeve had corner wear). I'd go broke if I went every week.
