Picked up this today for a dollar...

Mostly, because it reminds me of this...

Went an antique store close by that I've always driven by, but never gone in because it looked like a junk-box from the outside. Its essentially a junkstore, but they did have a good bit of records.

      I ended up with:
At Folsom Prison - Johnny Cash
      The Highwaymen - The Highwaymen

I also came across a couple Disney soundtracks (Peter Pan and Jungle Book) and two early Garth Brooks that I will probably go back for for at least the Disney records.

Also came across this little gem:

But it was $25 and I didn't want to spend money on something that would be more of novelty. Tempted, though.

Lol at that Chipmunks album.. Tempting, indeed.

I've had a hell of a time finding anything worth while at thrift shops and flea markets around town. I live on the buckle of the bible belt, so it seems to be a non stop supply of generic stock christian music, and just your run of the mill crap country/boring old white people music.

My girlfriend's dad has a very decent 70's/80's collection that I tried to raid the other day. He told me I could take whatever I wanted, but as we were going through them, I could tell he had a look in his eye that said he wasn't really ready to part with some of his all-time favorite records.

That being said, he doesn't listen to them anymore, and they're all practically in mint condition. So I'm going to just casually grab a few every time we go to their house until I have everything I want.. lol.

Made off with some Dire Straits, B-52s, Beach Boys, and Devo this time... Forgot how much I loved that first B-52's album. Don't think I've listened to it in it's entirety since back when I was little and my parents would play it on tape.

Ha, it is the same around here. It is amazing how much music I have never even heard of before and will never hear of again in some of those places. That's why the "music today sucks" threads and complaints always make me laugh because one trip to a flea market would really make people question the taste of music back in the day.

Around here it is a lot of country, bluegrass, and gospel and of course everything in between those three.

The closest "go to" place for music store quality selection and organization is about 90 minutes away so I don't get up there as often as I would like. That's probably a good thing for my wallet.

            Re: Vinyl Collectors?

            Bump

Back in August, somebody tweeted me a link to a mom and pop shop in Baton Rouge showing off CHVRCHES' Under The Tide release featuring a gold record. Even though I didn't have a vinyl player, I jumped on that **** like white on rice because a fool and his money. After buying Daft Punk's Discovery along with Ellie Goulding's Halcyon, CHVRCHES' The Bones Of What You Believe, and TV Girl's French Exit, all some of my personal favorite albums, I pressured my dad into fixing his old record player. What I didn't count on was him letting me into his record closet and take whatever I wanted.

So now I have a full fledged record collection that includes:

            Aerosmith | Greatest Hits
The Allman Brothers Band | The Best Of
            Blues Brothers | s/t
            Blues Brothers | OST
            The Cars | s/t
CHVRCHES | The Bones Of What You Believe
CHRVCHES | Under The Tide (limited edition yellow vinyl)
            Eric Clapton | Backtrackin'
Johnny Cash | I Walk The Line
            Phil Collins | Face Value
Creedence Clearwater Revival | The Very Best Of
            Daft Punk | Discovery
Deep Purple | When We Rock, We Rock And When We Roll, We Roll
John Denver | Back Home Again
Dire Straits | Brothers In Arms
Dexy's Midnight Riders | Too Rye Aye
            The Doors | Greatest Hits
Bob Dylan | Highway 61 Revisited
            Ellie Goulding | Halcyon
            Free | Best Of Free
            Marvin Gaye | Super Hits
            Genesis | s/t
            Genesis | Invisible Touch
Daryl Hall & John Oates | Rock'N Soul Part 1
Daryl Hall & John Oates | Abandoned Luncheonette
The Jimi Hendrix Experiment | Smash Hits
            Michael Jackson | Thriller
            Jefferson Airplane | Flight Log
Lynyrd Skynyrd | Pronounced Leh Nerd Skin Nerd
            Bob Marly | Legend
Steve Miller Band | Fly Like An Eagle
Pink Floyd | The Dark Side Of The Moon
            Pink Floyd | The Wall
The Police | Regatta de Blanc
Prince & The Revolution | Purple Rain
            Queen | The Game
            Queen | Jazz
            Run DMC | Raising Hell
            Rush | Archives
            Rush | Exit Stage Left
Bruce Springsteen | Born In The USA
Bruce Springsteen | Born To Run
Steppenwolf | Born To Be Wild
            Steppenwolf | s/t
Sugar Hill Gang | Rapper's Delight
Talking Heads | Speaking In Tongues
Talking Heads | Stop Making Sense
            Talking Heads | True Stories
Tears For Fears | Songs From The Big Chair
            Thin Lizzy | Jailbreak
Third Eye Blind | s/t (unopened!)
Toto | IV (Yes, I only took this for one song, sue me)
George Thorogood & The Destroyers | Bad To The Bone
George Thorogood & The Destroyers | Move It On Over
TV Girl | French Exit (marble red vinyl)
            U2 | Joshua Tree
            Wham! | Make It Big
            The Who | Tommy
            The Breakfast Club Soundtrack
            Saturday Night Fever Soundtrack
            Woodstock (documentary) Soundtrack

The whole time I was digging it was weird since I would be looking for, say, Pearl Jams' Ten, only to find he had no Pearl Jam but everything Air Supply put out, our he'd have everything Fleetwood Mac put out with the exception of Rumours , and the same with Flock Of Seagulls and whatever album I Ran was on. But I really can't complain about all of these additions.

IDK where to go from here, I guess try to figure out my absolute core favorite albums ever and try to hunt those down first. Probably need to find good kid, m.A.A.d city, The College Dropout, or Illmatic so Run DMC and Sugar Hill Gang aren't all by themselves. Problem is records are expensive as **** now so any album I buy will likely be something I consider a 9.5+ out of 10 and absolutely love.

              Re: Vinyl Collectors?

Looking through flea markets and antique stores is fun, but obviously depends on your area. I keep running into the same old ****ty country and gospel albums. I've yet to come across any significant rap or any rock past the 80s.

A lot of albums have been reprinted so they're easier to find, but I've got to have at least one pressing from those original runs.

Newer albums are hit and miss with me on the price. Most of them are reasonable, but then there are some that think they're cute and want $30+. Half the time I order from the band/label since you usually get some extra loot compared to Amazon.

Anyway, a heads up to any Black Crowes fans. They're reprinting their American recordings and releasing on vinyl December 18th. I went ahead and ordered Amorica and Shake Your Money Maker because I can't track down any of their stuff to save my life.

Yeah, when I "discovered" TV Girl they worked primarily through Bandcamp's "name your price" and I bought the digital bundle. A bit later, after some interactions on Twitter, they let me know that they were doing another run on vinyl of French Exit and since I paid for digital what they ask for a record, they let me have one. And I love how it stands out, in addition to it being one of my personal favorite albums of all time.

Also pictured is the single that started all of this

                    Re: Vinyl Collectors?

I got the chicken before the egg, or... whatever... Own a few vinyl albums, but do not have a record player yet. So right now they are just artwork or on the shelf.

                    It's a very modern collection:
Rise Against - Siren Song of the Counter Culture
Randy Rogers Band - Burning the Day
                    Emery - The Question
Emery - You Were Never Alone

I also got these from my parents:
The Eagles - Hotel California ... Eagles on the Border
                    Kiss - Destroyer

                      Re: Vinyl Collectors?

I've avoided vinyl because I don't have a record player and I'm simply not hip enough. But a couple years ago someone told me something that has stuck with me, that vinyl is more about the experience and having a physical connection to your favorite bands and albums.

It totally makes sense, but I can't justify spending money on vinyl records on top of having a Spotify subscription and random purchases of albums I especially enjoy. What can I say, I'm a digital guy. I enjoy tracking my music on last.fm and around this time, checking out my Year in Music that Spotify runs. Not the same but it gives me a sense of "collection."

Some of the vinyl pressings are sick, though. Anything splatter is awesome.
                      NHL - Philadelphia Flyers
                      NFL - Buffalo Bills
                      MLB - Cincinnati Reds

                        Re: Vinyl Collectors?

I was all digital too, but after a while I felt like I really wasn't supporting the artists I claimed to love. And while I don't like how expensive it's become, I sort of do because it adds meaning. Digging through my dad's collection, the most expensive record was 10 bucks, and it was for a "Best Of" that spanned four records. That would be the cheapest today. Back then, he could make blind purchases all day, now I have to make concentrated decisions between albums I love.

So really, of all the music I listen to in a year , I'd say I only plan on buying the top 25% at most

If I were to actually stop and think about the "why" for vinyl I would be hard pressed to come up with any excuse that could be backed up by any facts. It sounds, to me, a lot better. Even compared to CDs coming through a stereo I feel like there's enough depth coming from a vinyl to be noticeable. I feel like all the layers of a sound come shining through and you can pinpoint each piece of the sum.

Personally, the best vinyls will make you feel like you're in the actual venue or studio. As much as I've played some of my favorite CDs I cannot think of any where I've sat back and felt like if I closed my eyes I would transport to a different place.

Frampton Comes Alive is the one I've been looking for mostly. Haven't stumbled across it yet, probably gonna end up checking pawn shops because that's the only local place I haven't checked yet.
