The Eminem Show was his best if you ask me. His first three were really good, since then meh, but that's the case with ALOT of artists.

I'm suprised Big Boi isn't on the list as well. He's better than Snoop and Outkast are just, if not more legendary. Yeah, and Chuck D should replace LL. How the heck he made the list is FAR beyond me.

The Slim Shady LP is by far my favorite Eminem album.

I have Infinite on a CD somewhere. That came out in 96 or 97 I believe. That title track is dope as hell.

I don't think we'll ever agree, but by this logic, Ton Loc did not rap great on his two hit songs...why? Because they were written by Young MC.

Now does your logic stick or would you at least let up on Dre? :O)

Again, we should have determined criteria, so our conversation is fruitless.

I'll give you that Dre's catalog is up there with anyone. Writing his own rhymes or not his work can't be denied. Personally I don't think someone who doesn't write his own rhymes can be considered for greatest rapper of all time.

              Edit

Also your Young MC argument holds no weight. That's two hits and we are talking about greatest of all time. Two hits might equal greatest for a 6 month period but not all time.

Would a singer be disqualified if they didn't write their own lyrics?

Not anyone can deliver words written on paper but without a criteria "the greatest" is moot

Sorry Dudes but you need to write your own lyrics, this is not comparing singers who have ghost writers, thats 2 different things. Thats why, as hard as it is for me to say but MC Lyte is one of the greatest but not the greatest because alot of her early hits were ghost writin..

No because it takes talent to sing, but not much talent to rap. The talent is in the writing of the lyrics itself.

It takes talent to rap, unfortunately the suits at record labels keep force feeding Gucci, Waka, Soulja down our throats..

So would you say poetry is all about the words and not the emotion, delivery and etc?

Can't agree with this @ all....while it may not take as much talent as singing, everyone CAN NOT (even though they would like to think they can) rap. Things like tone, inflection, pitch and delivery of a word or phrase come into play all the time. Not to mention staying on beat (as stupid as that sounds).

And I have less respect for those that don't write their own rhymes...this artform more than any other is dependant on truth. How can "your" truth come from someone else's words?

I'm not going to say he's the greatest of all time, but for me, M.E.T.H.O.D. Man is the, well...man. I just think his flow is so smooth and I remember he was so cool to have playing in the background no matter what you were doing. He was hype and chill at the same time (if that makes any sense).

No, that isn't what I'm saying. Rap isn't the same as singing where you can have an artist like say...Whitney Houston who didn't write any of her music, but is renown as one of the greatest singers ever. The prerequisite of being a great rapper is writing your OWN stuff. Rap back in the day was about who was the illest spitter with the dopest lyrics. True enough, you gotta have the entire package (charisma, storytelling, emotion, delivery, hits, etc) to be considered one of the greats, but if a rapper was discovered to have not wrote any of his stuff, and they blew up...it would be considered a MAJOR taboo in the hip hop community.
