Re: Luther ( Tv Series BBC)
I don't watch miniseries. Don't have the patience for them.
But Luther was recommended to me and I couldn't stop watching it. I had to walk away from Netflix because I would've finished Season 1 in a single day.Comment

Re: Luther ( Tv Series BBC)
I watched the second set of episodes yesterday. I liked the storyline better (no real **** hitting the fan moments out of left field) and could see how they could have made a really exceptional season if they had stretched things out a little bit.
John Luther is great. Obviously a flawed protagonist, but its nice that the dude never lies. At least I haven't picked up on any. It sucks that he basically attracts these crazy, destructive people though. Idris is great. Sometimes you get a call back to Stringer (mainly in the walk), but John seems to have control over seemingly everything whereas Stringer just thought he did.
The show itself I feel like I should consider a guilty pleasure. A lot of things are very good and grounded, but the cases and people of interest are all very dynamic and eccentric (ie: psychotic). Its almost distracting how the show can have day-time drama style visuals and dialogue, but then flip that and go into some amazingly performed grounded drama.
With that said, I feel like these characters are head and shoulders above the typical L&O and CSI shows in the states. At least there feels like more of an actual dynamic and good diversity.
And Alice? **** in aye.
I don't know if anybody else has noticed this and I only really noticed it a lot in season 1, but the framing of some these conversations is odd and really unlike most shows. There's some shots where the character is stuck to the corner of the screen with a big block of background trying to steal your attention.Last edited by Fresh Tendrils; 09-10-2012, 10:11 AM.

Yeah, this has been on my queue for a very long while since I asked myself: "What is Idris Elba doing these days?"
I was trying to figure out which series I should watch next. Guess it's gonna be Luther."It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

It's unfortunate how few episodes there are."It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. So outside of Elba's acting (and I absolutely love his chief's acting too. Gotta IMDB her because I know I've seen her elsewhere), I am absolutely loving the camera shots and editing.
Those are my favorite things about the show. I love seeing a character pushed against screen when arguing or feeling conflicted, angered during a tough scene.
I also love when Luther is breaking down a crime scene or explaining motive and they choose to jump cut during those moments. It's jarring but in a way that makes me feel as if I too am piecing the puzzle together from fragments.
The last show I watched that did this well (before screwing the story up) was Heroes on NBC. That series constantly found innovative ways to express character emotion through angles, framing and cuts.

Re: Luther ( Tv Series BBC)
Even thought the Brits leave you starvin like Marvin for more content, there's something to be said for how they do their shows. They have a certain story to tell, it takes X amount of time to tell it, they break it up into Y episodes, tell the story and that's it.
No filler episodes, no making the characters insanely stupid to extend plots longer then they should be, just on point all the way. If people like it, and they have some more ideas about those characters, then they tell some more stories about them.
It's what makes shows like Luther, Sherlock, and Torchwood so good.Jordan Mychal Lemos

Re: Luther ( Tv Series BBC)
Just finished series 2. This show is amazing.
Gotta say the most memorable moment for me was...
SpoilerThe whole set-up and climax of the scene mid-way through series 1 where the murderous taxi driver wants to kill the prostitute in his house. The feeling of total dread that I got when the escort began to realize what was happening while on the phone with the authorities is something I haven't felt watching many other shows.Last edited by Gibbz; 09-14-2012, 09:37 PM.Comment
