FOX has a history of doing this. It has screwed up many a series. Thankfully, New Girl can still work when out of order, but I never understood why FOX, or any other network, does this.
They say it's because they want a particular episode to play for a particular day, but when a show is as funny as New Girl, there's no need to mix it up. Looking further into this and the continuity issues of Valentine's Day actually don't seem to hold much water since Valentine's Day would actually have been the newest of episodes written that have already aired.
