It changed very recently. You could always get the app free and use the radio, but it went from $4.99 to be able to search and play music with ads to $0 so now it's free to actually use it for the reason you want to use it.

I guess because a tablet is essentially replacing a laptop. And the browser/downloadable version has always been free.

Personally, since y'all enlightened me I've been using the shuffle artist ever since. That's plenty good enough. For some reason, my data isn't being used up as fast either. I don't know what it was that one day.

          Spotify

What's everyone's thoughts on the recent facelift? Speaking for the mobile app here.

Honestly, I think it's more jumbled then before. Prettier, sure. But I find it less functional. Sometimes feel like I get lost when I've searched for an artist and went to a couple others from that original search. That was my complaint with Rdio, which everyone seemed to love their user interface. Spotify ripped it pretty hard, now we're stuck with this uniform UI for both.

One thing I've noticed is that not all albums show even when you view all albums. You'll have to search it directly, or wait for a track from that album to pop up. Went ahead and saved it with the quickness so I wouldn't lose it.

Any and all criticisms aside, being able to shuffle a band's albums and make your own playlists for free is like heaven on Earth. It's almost bad though because I'm less apt to buy a band's releases, instead using this free service or debating about buying a subscription. I read somewhere the bands don't see much in return from these services, which is disappointing... But isn't that something that was negotiated by the labels? I guess anger should be directed at them for, I assume, syphoning any profit into their own pockets.

Labels are taking it all. The whole licensing part of the industry is pretty crappy for the bands and amazing for the suits.

I was worried that the quality of mp3 streams wouldn't hold up on Spotify, but I've been pleasantly surprised. I just recently ordered a E09k headphone amp to add to my E17 DAC. I've discovered lots of new artists I never heard of before, plus the interface is slick on my laptop and phone.

Sorry T Swift fans, she has now pulled ALL of her music from Spotify. I get it, but then I don't get it. Do they think that every person who has streamed a Taylor Swift song is all of a sudden going to go out and buy all of her albums?

Yup. I believe they're pulled from YouTube as well, which apparently pays better then Spotify.

If there's something not available, I search around and then am done with it. I can live without it when there's so much other music available begging for my attention.

I get that they're trying to herd people to the record store or iTunes, but they're fighting a losing battle. EMBRACE the streaming services. Otherwise you're going to get nothing in return on pirated music. I understand their idea, but it's not going to turn out that way. Some gains, but not enough to warrant stopping her music from reaching its full audience.

It is 99 cents for 3 months of premium until 12/31.

If you already have a premium account, it won't work.

                        Re: Spotify

I just jumped on the deal. Took 5 seconds. I listen every day at work and sometimes at home, pretty exclusively on my phone.

This deal was a no brainer.

But what made me take the dive is that ads are getting beefed up for free users, or at least so I've heard. Like full songs as ads.

                        I don't play that.

It's only $10/month + tax and for how much I use, it's worth the price of admission. Plus, since I lost my music collection, I can rebuild it a bit by storing my favorite tracks. Love that feature.

The Discover Weekly playlists Spotify auto generates every Monday are super on point. Been three weeks I believe since they started appearing, and each playlist has been impressive. Maybe 3 or so songs I actually listen to regularly, then the rest is populated by bands/artists I should be interested in. I recognize most the bands, just never get around to really checking them out.

                          Great, impressive feature.

It's weird that Spotify Radio sucks (or at least it was unless it's been improved) but their discovery is so great.

What I don't get is why the shuffle algorithm for this damn service sucks so bad. It's horrendous. Seems like it only taps into a few of the artists and songs you have saved. It's absurd.

I wish there was a way to shuffle multiple playlist at the same time.

Hmm, how do you use Spotify? And are you paying or just using the free version?

I pay for Premium. For me, I save full albums to "My Music" and pretty much will let them play through. I know I'm in the minority. I mainly use Playlists to compile a whole band's albums and singles. Now that I think about it, yeah, when you shuffle an artist's discography from their Artist profile page, you do get repeats. That Top 5 songs they display on each Artist page screws things up, I think. That's why I started essentially creating my own artist profiles using the playlists.
