    Re: Official Rock music thread

You have to look beyond the radio to find most good rock music these days.

Far beyond it. There are plenty of groups I listen to that are on the radio, but I definately don't use the radio as my source to new music.

Yeah, the bands that I listen to that are on the radio are mostly all bands that have been around since at least the 1990s haha

That goes for every genre, not just rock/metal.

Anyone else listen to Bloc Party? New album out August 20th, although it has leaked already.

like i posted earlier, the only really good rock band ive heard come out in the past year here in the states has been volbeat.

i also kinda like that alabama shakes song i heard the other day too.

I was a fan of the silent alarm album, but never heard anything from them after that.

I think they're both about the same degree of difficulty. Rock music can be pretty simple at times.

I'm disappointed with today's rock in general, I never listen to the radio anymore and have become way more of a metalhead. I grew up in the 90s when rock was great, now it almost annoys me.

I see all these bands listed that I've never heard of and it's because there is no radio station in my area that plays them. The only rock station here plays the same songs from the same bands over and over, which is why I don't bother tuning in anymore unless the cd player in my car won't read my driving mix.

It's amazing to me how many high quality musical genres don't have a place on radio, unless you have satellite/sirius. But I don't do internet radio either so I'm sure that's the spot. The only way I find out about new stuff is by checking out the leak sites and searching for the bands on youtube.

I don't even remember what the goal of this post was, I think I went off the tracks somewhere.
Even beyond the radio there's some crappy bands. I feel like there's a couple different indie movements going on right now, but there's definitely a lot of "poser" bands out there I feel like. Its not nearly as bad as the mainstream cut and paste, but sometimes I get that same sense of things when there's 20+ bands that all sound a like.

What new stuff have you guys been listening to this year? It feels like its been a busy year for country-rock, but everything else has been relatively quiet. I think my favorite album of the year is Big Moon Ritual by Chris Robinson Brotherhood. Probably the only album I've heard that I would have no problem saying its a truly great album.

Volbeat is awesome! When I heard them on the radio I had to pinch myself.

The only new albums that I've bought this year that I even think are worth mentioning are as follows:

                        Say Anything - Say Anything
                        Gaslight Anthem - Handwritten
                        Cursive - I Am Gemini
                        Fang Island - Major
                        Bouncing Souls - Comet
                        Serj Tankian - Harakiri
                        Rhett Miller - The Dreamer
The Menzingers - On the Impossible Past
Silversun Pickups - Neck of the Woods

Of those bands, I think that it's at least the third album for all of them (could be wrong about the Menzingers and Fang Island though). I haven't found a lot of new artists in the last few years that impress me much.

Id recommend the new Our Lady Peace album, although it's different than .anything else they've done. Still their best effort in 10 years though lol

I got it, but wasn't too impressed. It had some bright spots, but overall, it was pretty mediocre to me. I still liked Happiness infinitely more.

Yeah Happiness is my favorite. All 8 have their moments but their first 4 are their best, witbh Curve and Gravity close behind.

One thing i always do when I find a band I like is go their page, and their Wikipedia page and see who their influences are. You can tell a lot, and also find some cool new music that way.

You get some weird stuff though. Third Eye Blind apparently started as a Jane's Addiction cover band. Never would have seen that coming...
