Yea I'd need to get the Astro Amp, but if I go that route I'm also grabbing a good open sound stage designed pair like the HD558's. If you go and do some serious reading on gaming headsets, marketed "gaming" headsets are not even in contention. Its all open sound stage headsets because it accurately portrays depth and 3d nature gaming presents.

For example, every Onkyo 606 receiver eventually loses the ability to properly switch between HDMI ports, necessitating the installation of a new HDMI board.

I'm not saying don't get an Onkyo, as other receiver companies have had issues, and it should really be looked at on a model-by-model basis (since one model may last long but another won't), but I would go to sites like AVSForum and do research on the models I was considering before buying.
Excellent post and onkyo is still having on going problems with their hdmi boards going out!!
A real shame if you ask me. They have excellent features with a competitive price but very risky if you ask me.
I'm in the market for a new avr and am having a hellva time trying to find a reliable middle of the road product. I'm kind of amazed at the amount of problems that a lot of brands are having. Haven't a clue on what to do...

Ended up ordering these and they arrived today. Wow! I don't want yo give them up! I'm debating selling my ATH M50. I liked the sound equal on both and these were much softer on the head since they are on ear. Of course it was 5 minutes of listening so I'll have to test them out again later. Still was really impressed!

Ok made some slight adjustment to my buying options.

                Sennheiser 598s?
                Audio Technica ATH-AD700x?
                Beyerdynamic DT990 Pro 250s?

I'm leaning the Sennheiser 598s since I love Sennheiser to begin with. While the AD700x are in the same price range and very similar sound quality. I'm a bit turned off by the head band quality. Then you are the DT990s which have one of the largest sound stages but from reviews, sloppy bass which is required to be amp driven to tighten it up.

So what do you guys think? Also which amp do you think I should push any of these with?

man i really miss my Sennheiser 598s. They were my favorites for TV, movies, non online gaming and listening to rock/accoustic music. They are by the most comfortable headphones i had, i could wear them for hours. I didn't use them for mobile use obviously because everyone can hear what you are listening to. Definitely need an amp for mobile use. I used Fiio 6 amp and i also have an E7 which of course sounds the best but I normally plugged them into my receiver

If I can score a new pair under $150 its what I'm going to go with. Now as far as the amp, which do you believe would be the best for both the PS4 and PC. I know the Astro mixamp works with the PS4 but I'm not sure if I want to take the sound quality hit of virtual surround. I'd almost rather stay a regular stereo amp that works across both.

I strictly used my receiver when I was gaming and it will obviously give you better sound than any amp could. I only use my amp when i'm on my laptop or ipod

                        Re: The Audiophile Thread

I have this old cheap surround sound setup for my gaming.
                        http://www.amazon.com/Sony-HT-DDW700.../dp/B000EOJ792

You can see it on the lower right, near where my leg would be the receiver is on that shelf.
                        Spoiler

So as you can see it is easy with my setup to use the headphones with both my PS4 and PC. My only concern with this, is this receiver good enough to push the headphones. I read the impedance(ohms) of the headphones should be couple times higher than that of the receiver. I'm not sure what it is for the receiver and finding info on it is difficult, even Sony spec sheet is not helping.

Nice and clean setup Phobia, my gf just saw your pic and said why i can't get mine clean like that lol. You really don't know until you try it right? You can always get an amp later if its not to your liking.

Haha, I try to keep it clean all the time but its not like that pic everyday.

I been running the setup by some guys on a audiophile headphone site and the info I received is that the receiver will push them fine but its the ohms that will kill the sound quality. So im going to grab a dedicated headphone amp to run the correct specs through them.

Spending nice chunk on quality cans, guess running the right setup is worth it. Especially if they sound as good in games as people say.

                              Re: The Audiophile Thread

Well after exhausted research, I've decided to change which headphones I'm going to save up for.

The Sennheiser 598s have the tremendous soundstage which is critical for pin pointing footsteps and such in FPS, the issue is the lack of bass. While I'm not a huge bass head, I could see where this would be a draw back in a game like Battlefield where explosions draw you in the immersion. If that bass is really lacking I could see myself being upset. I'm not a super competitive gamer and more gaming for fun so I looked more into that side.

                              These all made the cut.

First Choice: Beyerdynamic DT880 *A open-air design, but also packing good bit more bass than the Senn 598, decent competitive positioning, and clear highs.*

Second Choice: Beyerdynamic DT770 *Only closed design I might go with. Much more bass than any in this bunch. Much more "fun" style head phone with killer immersion in games like DeadSpace. Big sound stage for a closed headphone, but the bass can drown out tiny sounds making it not the best for competitive gaming.*

Third Choice: Beyerdynamic DT990 *Open-air design like I want and better than both the above choices. Problem is the price is out my current price range. These are the ones I REALLY want but I have to factor in cost also. If I can score these in the same range as the 880 or 770's then I'm grabbing the 990s QUICK!!!*

Final Choice: Philips Fidelio X1 *Open-air like I'm after but almost way out my price range in the $250 range. I'll do some searching but the best of this whole list.*

If you're looking at the Beyers you're going to want a dedicated headphone amplifier for them. You're probably going to want a DAC as well to deal with any potential noise from your computer's sound card.
