    Re: The Audiophile Thread

That's a tough call. The M50s are more balanced than the PRO500 which sacrifices highs and mids for more bass.

The HD558 are much more balanced, they have much better clarity, and they have much better soundstage, they do not have the abundance of bass that the other two have. The HD558 are also more of a non-portable headphone, they are big, don't fold, and really should probably be amped from a portable source. Some also find this range of Sennheiser to be "clampy" and uncomfortable (I don't have that issue though).

I would say you'd be happiest with the M50, just shop around and don't pay more than $110 for them.

Thank You! I don't travel a whole lot, but enough to rule out the 558. Didn't realize that they did not fold. I am still learning about the highs/mids/lows and what not. Amazon has the white M50 for $119, but I will check around.

$104, but their online ordering just went offline until tomorrow night, and it looks like they are waiting for more stock.

Actually, Onkyo's have historically had problems with longevity and reliability. In fact, Onkyo had to recall nearly it's entire 2011 lineup of receivers (but to their credit they offered free repairs), and many users of older models have reported a wide array of malfunctions. For example, every Onkyo 606 receiver eventually loses the ability to properly switch between HDMI ports, necessitating the installation of a new HDMI board.

I'm not saying don't get an Onkyo, as other receiver companies have had issues, and it should really be looked at on a model-by-model basis (since one model may last long but another won't), but I would go to sites like AVSForum and do research on the models I was considering before buying.

Agreed, over the past several years Onkyo receivers have been known for packing in features but having higher than usual QA issues. Can be made a moot point by getting the extended warranty though.

My next AVR will probably be a Denon.

All I own is Denon and haven't had any issues yet. Denon and Arcam are the top two for me. I'll eventually upgrade to an Arcam when I feel like it. Arcam receivers just have such a clean sound, and they're the best UI I've seen in a receiver to date.

I'm thinking about getting these Polk RTi A7 towers and this Polk CSI A6 center. I can get a pretty amazing deal through a Best Buy accommodation that I still have access through. Any thoughts? I thought I should upgrade my front stereos and center to go with my new receiver.

If you can get the Polk accommodation dig deeper into their deals. They have some stellar deals for very very good speakers.

Any recommendations for a dirt cheap 5.1 avr other than the two I'm about to lsit? My buddy found some speakers in his parents garage (JVC SP-7700 + 3 smaller ones, but not sure what they might be) and was wanting to get them hooked up to see how they sound. He is still on TV speakers and after hearing my new setup he couldn't stand it. So we figured we would give these a shot.

Best Buy has these two for pretty cheap and $250 a firm max budget. Any pros and cons between the two other than YPAO versus Audyssey?

Just based on track record, I'd say go with the Denon. Never used YPAO, but I always got good results with Audyssey.

I always adjust levels manually by ear or with a meter. I would go Denon though. Adjust manually, once you get good at it the results are way better. A meter is obviously top notch, which is way different than the set up mic before someone asks.

Amazon has PM'ed Fry's price on the Klipsch Synergy 12" 300W Sub. $200 shipped. (Apparently, this got as low as $180 on a previous Amazon goldbox or lightning deal) I'm so tempted, but have no where to put it at the moment.

Recommendations for a record/vinyl player? Would be my first one. I am interested.

I have this speaker system if it helps with the recommendation. http://www.logitech.com/en-us/produc...d-speaker-z506
