What do they mean by "open back"? I looked at them and I can see no opening in the back.

Notice all those little holes on the side facing you. Completely opposite of the direction the speaker would be facing (Back of ear cup). That is an open-back head phone

Closed-back - notice the sealed plastic ear cups

The pressure/"air" the speaker creates, is allowed to dissipate via the mesh "back" side of the speaker. Basically closed backs are your stereotypical headset where the back side of the ear cups are sealed plastic. Forcing the pressure from the speaker & sound to remain in each ear cup. Open-backs allow that sound & pressure to escape.

I've done many write ups on here about openbacks & gaming, I'll dig them up and post links here.

I wouldn't play with a closed back pair of cans, especially in a competitive shooter.

No certain order, but these pertain to Openback vs Closedback and virtual surround sound vs stereo 2ch audio. Hopefully these will help

Ahh ok, excellent explanation...makes sense now. I looked at those headphones and holy cow, I cannot afford that for awhile, but I'm sure they are awesome!!

          Re: The Audiophile Thread

Took me awhile, but realized I don't have the best audio setup for my TV.

I bought a basic "home theater in a box" years ago. It works fine when watching TV for the most part as all my speakers do work(and you can notice a difference in back speakers vs front speakers), but I never understood audio connections so much.

Decided to check out all connections in the back and realized my TV doesn't have an 'Audio Out' output. I got abunch of 'Audio In' inputs though. All it has is a single 'Optical Out' output, but my receiver doesn't have an optical input.

So I can still get regular audio from my cable box(my receiver is connected to my TV using an HDMI cable, but the receiver gets sound from my cable box through a composite cable since the receiver has only 1 HDMI port), but I'm guessing it's not as good as it should be, especially if I play stuff straight from my TV(like using Chromecast).

If you don't have open back headphones and you wanna experience them, this is a perfect intro to it at an awesome price. The original of these were my first ones and I fell in love. You do need a receiver or headphone amp to power them but once you, they are great headphones that you can put on for hours and not feel em. Super comfy and great sound.

Does anyone know anything about mini-amps? $100 budget

I'm trying to get my parents setup with a patio TV/audio setup. I want the TV audio, and an Echo Dot to go to an amp, then out to two Polk Patio 200s. I'd imagine both audio sources could be analog (RCA/3.5mm). Nothing fancy at all. It will be on a patio, but 20' away from the weather and up high so no chance of it being rained out.

I came across these on Crutchfield, but even those are bigger than what I was looking for.

I use mine for gaming. On PUBG the directional sound was good enough for me. I value music a lot more than the specific aspects of gaming sound like that. They are amazing headphones for the price.

Anyone know a thing or two about optical to rca converters?

I'm looking into getting one since my audio system only has rca inputs, but my tv has optical output.

I'd just recommend upgrading your receiver instead.. The converters can be kinda finicky..
