I'm not sure where else to post this, but this seems like a pretty general tablet discussion.

I'm looking to buy my girlfriend a tablet/eReader for Christmas. She's new to eBooks but wants to read more. She loves using my Asus Transformer for light web surfing (mostly Facebook) and playing games. She's starting to get into Netflix streaming. I've been bouncing back and forth between giving her a Kindle Fire or finding a reasonable tablet (if I can find a good deal on one, that is). I've been seeing refurbed tablets popping up every now and then, and wasn't sure if I should trust those. Any suggestions on which route I should take?

Give her your Transformer, and you upgrade to the Transformer Prime.

Didn't see any general thread and figured I wouldn't get an unbiased answer in the Fire thread.

As much of a tech head that I am I know nothing about these. We are debating on which one to get for my mom. My dad keeps saying iPad, but I don't think he knows they are $500. She would just play games, browse facebook and read books on it. She has an iPhone 4 so she would know her way around the iPad. She'd probably also get made because they are funding a trip to Vegas for my sister's wedding and didn't want any of us spending a lot on each other lol.

If it can check email, browse facebook and play games then it's what she needs. I've never been in the Android Market place so don't know what is available there either.

So what should I look for?

why not look at a used ipad 1 or 2 if you think she'd like an ipad the most. iOS would be more familiar, it has the superior app selection, and she could even share game saves between her ipad and phone through icloud. I got a first gen ipad for a family member off craigslist, and it was in perfect condition because the owner threw a screen protector and case on it when they bought it new.

I've messed around with some android tablets, and I personally wouldn't consider getting one until ICS. Yeah, the app selection is worse than ios, but the phone versions of android have seemed poorly optimized for tablets so far. I'm interested in the Transformer Prime though, but the quad core specs are largely pointless for just internet and gaming use.

This is actually great advice.

An Android table it lost on someone like a Mom. Poor user interface and buggy apps.

You can get iPad1's for around $350 refurbished from Apple I believe.

Jailbreak and then complain about simplicity. If you know Linux and coding, that is not a valid comment.

Something Ollie's mother would probably never have to be concerned with anyway. The User Interface is as friendly as they come for beginner and expert alike.

I will not be using the keyboard and almost strictly as a tablet. Will a difference between 1.6 and 2.2 be a huge difference?

I have the Asus Transformer and love it. Previously I have owned an iPad, iPad 2, and an Archos 101.

The real deciding factor for me was the price. I could not justify the $500+ to keep the iPad 2 and managed to snag a used Asus (with the keyboard dock) for $210 on ebay a few weeks ago.

The app store is lacking compared to the iPad's, but this is mainly do to the lack of tablet specific apps. There are some that take advantage of the tablet screen, but many do not.

As for the weight, it is a little heavy for one handed use when compared to the iPad 2. It is more similar to the original iPad in terms of look and feel.

Has anyone been able to get HBO Go on their android? I know its not out yet for it but hope there is a work around.
