Re: Whitney Houston Dead at 48

Just saw that Amazon Video added The Bodyguard for free.

As for the posters against tributes, I just don't get it. Whitney is not the first or even the biggest musical icon to have a drug or drinking problem. Elvis, Michael, Jimi, Cobain many of the greats had demons just like Whitney did and left the world before we wanted them to.

I guarantee we all have music that we love are from an artist who have either died early due to drugs/alcohol or has gone through a major drug problem. If you don't, then the music you listen to sucks.

And whenever you do listen to a song from a person who is not alive, your honoring their memory every time you listen to it.

I will remember Whitney's voice forever.

Look, I remember when Whitney first appeared during a music age that I largely despised. I didn't really like pop music either, but there was clearly something about her that had her stand above the rest. Probably because it was the fact that she did display an incredible high level of talent and range at the earliest point of her career ... you could easily see that she had true vocal quality, which was a relief compared to the one-hit wonders and studio generated crap of that era. You knew she was not going to flicker out as easily as the bands and solo artists of the time. But this doesn't make her a cultural icon. Highly talented, successful and brilliant in her work, yes, but not an icon.
I don't know what those definitions are trying to prove for you, but saying the most awarded female artist of all time is not an icon is pretty absurd. Yes, the word itself does get overused and while Whitney doesn't fit every definition of the word doesn't meant it doesn't apply to her. Arguing semantics is pretty silly at this point.

Heard the news late last night. Wow. Very sad. I can remember as a kid dancing around in my parent's den to I Wanna Dance With Somebody.

Prayers definitely go out to the family left behind.

Whitney was huge in the late 80's / early 90's but she only had 1 #1 single since 1992. So for an "icon" to have all her sucsess in just a 7 year period she ends up very dated and nearly unknown to the under 30 crowd. I just went through her singles and I could only recognize 4 of them. So to those in thier teens and 20s in the 80s she might be an icon but not to me.

Well I'm 22 but my mom always used to play Whitney. Heck MJ didn't have that many hits in the late 90s and 00s but he was still so well known from his past work that it didn't matter. The same applies to a lesser extent to Whitney. I'm sure a lot of people my age know of her work because of their parents as well.

My mom and I used to dance to that song all the time when I was younger.

And yes (without a damn doubt) Whitney Houston is an icon. There were many who were involved with drugs. Doesn't make you any better than them.

For the first time in years, I may just watch the Grammys tonite. They're already working on a tribute to her.

I feel bad for the daughter. Her father's a jerk, and now her mom's gone. Just hope she doesn't follow the same path as she gets older.....

                  RIP.

Thats the difference between an all-time great artist and an icon. Young people know MJ because his music is all over TV, movies and commercials. Outside of the bodyguard song most of Whitney's hits went when they went off the airwaves. How many icons can there be? It seems overused like "elite" when talking about QBs. Whitney is one of about 20 groups/people to sell over 85 million certified records, do they all count as icons?

I wouldn't say Whitney was an icon but to dismiss her the way you seemingly are doing here is just a little much. You also seem to forget that just a couple years ago she had some success with "I look to you" and "Million dollar bill". Whitney is one of those artists I think that hovers around the consistently successful and legend category. I do think that a lot of the off mic stuff may play into her fame more than her music but sometimes that happens with stars that die relatively young.

As for her death I was totally caught unawares as I was looking up info on War Horse on IMDB as the GF and I were going to watch it and I saw the headline and read the story. I literally shouted out "OMG WHITNEY HOUSTON IS DEAD!". I hadn't heard much about her lately and to see that as a headline associated with her was shocking but in the end not surprising. (as an aside I thought Bobby Brown would die before her)

RIP to a great talent who could've done and been more in the industry. At the very least she'll be remembered forever for her rendition of the "Star spangled banner" and the song "I Will Always Love You".
