How is this season? I went on a binge and plowed through seasons 1-4 on blu ray in 2 weeks then got burned out on the repetition. Is it worth jumping back on the bandwagon?

Re: Mad Men (madmen) Season 5
This season there is less "movement" in the physical sense. For example, season 1-4 you had Don having a lot of relationships, awkward situations with his identity, etc. Last season you had Don's marriage ending and a new beginning with him living singe, leaving tobacco, etc. This season, its more emotional movement as opposed to "things happening". I dont want to sound like I dont enjoy it, but I can see a difference in this season as a whole when compared to other seasons.Comment

And Don is also highly sensitive to the issue of prostitution because of his mother.Comment

Re: Mad Men (madmen) Season 5
A good read about Joan
It adds up, intellectually, barely, if everything breaks just right and the wind stays from the south-southwest. But it feels mechanical. It doesn’t feel like this Joan, at this point in time.

This is probably the best way I would describe my feelings about the proposition. I can see why she would do it (strictly for the partnership, I don't think any of other reasons matter), I just didn't feel like there was enough there to build that shift from her interaction with Pete to the end. Still a good episode (I love Ginsberg finally getting that ok from Don - he's like Peggy in that regard) and Hendricks was really superb.Comment

Re: Mad Men (madmen) Season 5
I see your point but I disagree with the writer's claim that all of the things that caused her to do this happened after Pete's proposition. The entire season she has had conversations with her mom about trouble w/ money, been annoyed about her mom having to be there to help raise her son because she cant afford a nanny, separated from her husband and blown off Roger's offers to help raise her son. If none of those things happen, I think she refuses to sleep with the Jaguar guy.
The control (or lack thereof) seems to be a consistent theme this season, especially with Don. It will be interesting to see how this season ends and when/if Peggy will return.

And when this buxom beauty joins her fellow "partners" she didn't look the least bit embarrassed.Comment

Re: Mad Men (madmen) Season 5
I wonder if there is perhaps an underlying "reason" for her change in her interaction with Don in previous episodes. I dont have a full flushed out theory, but going with him to get the Jaguar, sitting at the bar with him and then "picking up" that stranger. I wonder if some of that Draper-ness that most of the characters seem fond of didnt rub off on her at that moment.
Like with Peggy, it's always "if Don were here..." "What would Don do..." so now with Joan, she might perhaps be looking to "move forward" and basically go get what she wants by the best means she knows how...its not like she's been a maiden to this point. Now shes a partner and has more control in multiple ways by doing something that in her mind seems to be the only way to move forward in her life.Comment

No comments? Wow.
And Wow @ that episode. Damn, Lane. I don't think he will but I wonder how others (especially Cooper) would react if Don were to tell them everything. I say Cooper because I'm considering his [non]reaction to finding out about Don's deception and how it was the exact opposite of how Don dealt with Lane's.PS: You guys are great.

Re: Mad Men (madmen) Season 5
There's a big difference between Don's deception (at least what I'm thinking of from early on in the series where Pete lets the cat out of the bag about Whitman) and Lane embezzling money. This episode did a wonderful job of making you feel sorry for Lane, but come on son you can't put Draper's name on a check and not expect him to lay down the law. The scene between Lane and Don was terrific and Jared Harris himself definitely made up for the shoe-horned in feel of his earlier financial crisis moments. The Jaguar was a nice red herring, but damn that was gruesome. I'm still sad my assumption on the death/suicide was right, but I really hope my other one (Don leaving advertising) is not proven true next week. Great performances all around tonight, even from Weiner's kid who I typically ****ing despise.
And Megan's outburst again defused in like two seconds.
