When I launch a game my TV usually flickers than comes back on.

Running through the few games I have installed none of them seem to have a borderless windowed option. I seem to be able to get over to my second screen as long as I'm still at the main menu, but I know playing Civ V and Crusader Kings II allowed me to get to the second screen while playing which is annoying.

Anybody running an FX 8350 here? If so, how is it running for you? I put an EVO 212 on it and its staying plenty cool but this chip is struggling compared to the Q6600 I just upgraded.

Question: I have a $700 budget or so, and have never really built/bought a PC that would be conducive to gaming. Lately, I've grown interested in changing that.

First things first. I looked up about every single possible pre-built gaming PC that I could find. There were a few for about $600 that seemed promising, but I later found out that nothing in that price range would get me very far. For whatever reason, they build "gaming PCs" that really can't run games as simple as Skyrim, Dark Souls, etc. I figured for that price you would get something more along the lines of what you get in a $200 gaming console, but I suppose that isn't the case. Not even close.

Secondly, I've heard from almost everyone that building your own PC is the way to go. So my question is, where do I start? I'd rather not build one, but it seems like it's the only way to go. Any advice would be super helpful, as I am a total noob with these things.

1. Go to Youtube and type in PC Builds. Watch every video on the 1st page just to get your feet wet.

2. Make a budget of how much you want to spend. And determine what kind of quality you are seeking. 1080p ? 1440p ? 4K ? 30fps ? 60fps ?

Your budget should be based on the type of games you know you like to play. Some games are graphic and CPU intensive, others are not. For example it wouldn't make sense to spend a lot of money on a gaming PC if all you play is Minecraft, DOTA 2 and Hearthstone.

Define struggling....

And what are you doing when it struggles ? It might not be the CPU, it could be a lack of RAM or your graphics card.

Don't really have any advice ... but consider the type of casing that you want. Just thought I throw something out there in case it makes any difference.

Someone built me a custom PC through craigslist, I could have also had it built down at Frys Electronics. My primary purpose was to get an over the air DVR (6 channel TV tuner; 3 separate hauppauge TV tuners; windows media center) that will also serve as an all in one computer. It's currently hooked up through my AV receiver and ultimately to my 55" Sony HDTV. Initially, I had him build me one with a standard PC tower. The tower didn't really fit anywhere in my bedroom. Decided I wanted something that will jive aesthetically with the rest of my media center (hidden inside a closest area; all my electronics: Receiver, External Harddrives, Printer, Video Game Consoles [PS4,PS3,Xbox360], Router, Modem, etc.).

Silverstone GD08 - This one fits full size components. There are other ones on the market but through research, not a lot of these media center HTPC cases fit full size components. The Silverstone was spacious.

Question regarding that site. Is everything compatible on each list, or only across each row? For example, if I were to build the "very good" computer exactly how it is listed, and at some point I wanted to upgrade the graphics card, is it basically plug and play? I assume I'd have to add in additional upgrades to support a new graphics card, but are most of these builds relatively future proof in terms of being able to plug and play at my leisure?

I'm completely new to this whole PC building thing, so I have no clue what I am doing. I'd love to have a gaming PC that can play modern games quite well, but I have no need of running new games at ultra settings or anything.

Graphics cards are all pretty much plug n play save for very rare specific cases (it those upgrading quite a bit and not having a power supply big enough to support new parts.) The main issue with upgrading normally comes from the motherboard/CPU socket being the biggest limitation.

Yea, I'm with the other guy. Define struggling. I have the same setup, and sure, I didn't overclock it as much as I thought I could have and that sucker will get hot if I push all 8 cores, but it works fine for what it is. I'm not seeing how it could be outperformed, by today's standards, an ancient Q6600.

Build it yourself it's fun! It's easy and pretty much is all just plugging stuff in. The only thing that isn't really is putting thermal paste on the CPU. Which is still really easy.

I just upgraded my mobo, cpu and ram this week coming from the Q6600 with 4gb on a mid level Asus mobo to a Gigabyte 970, FX 8350 and 8gb.


In Winrar and just multitasking in general. I did update my copy of Winrar since I was using a very outdated copy and that has helped drastically. It seems to slow way down whenever I start to perform more than 2 things at a time. If I'm running Winrar, sometimes Firefox wont even load up until Winrar is done with its task. My old Q6600 would multitask like a champ, watch video, run virus scan, Winrar, etc. Although in games its running quite well paired with a GTX 660 SC.

Ancient, yes. But theres a reason why I didnt feel the need for an upgrade till now. That cpu had been fantastic for me at least. In games the FX 8350 is excellent from my short time with it tho.

Still running a Q6600, 4 gig ram, and 560ti. Like you I love this proc and would upgrade soon if I could get ram to for this mobo. Oh well, build made it almost 8 years so it's time.

Add another 8GB of RAM and you will be fine. Technically though you should be able to do what you are trying to do with just the 8GB of RAM you already have, unless you have slow speed RAM. What is the speed of your RAM ?
