Just saw the film and enjoyed it a lot. I think it was well crafted and did a lot within some restrictions I'm pretty sure are common in "superhero" films.

First restriction....Actors have to get FACE time. I don't know if this is a studio/actor/Hollywood problem but most superhero films fall prey to this. The actor tends to spend more time exposed than in costume (This increases sequel by sequel). I'm of the opinion that it's a combo of ego/economics that creates this but I don't mind it as much when it's covered logically within the film...so having

worked for me. (by the by, I loved DREDD and Urban for avoiding this)

Second restriction...and this speaks to the Mandarin/villain issue, is how movies tend to lean to "permanent" solutions to heroes stopping villains. Maybe it would seem anti climactic for them just to be arrested after all they have done (though it didn't bother me in The Dark Knight with Joker) but if you make a movie knowing that the heel is going to be a one trick pony then

The Mandarin twist is much more clever than having a helicopter fall on him and explode

The twist wouldn't have been nearly as dissapointing if the fake mandarin hadn't been looking so promising throughout the first half of the movie. Imagine if halfway though The Dark Knight the Joker turned out to be a fake and Brad Pitt pranced around the rest of the movie as the real joker.

The real Mandarin here, Guy Pearce, does not embody the Mandarin character at all.

He was, in fact, a completely different character from the comics.

My problem here is Mandarin is awesome, Extremis is awesome, AIM/MODAK are awesome, and the movie kinda ruined all three.

Mandarin is probably the most common problem, though, the previews gave us this awesome villain, and it all ended up being bull**** and the actual villain was a sorry cliche.

Aside from looking a bit asian, what's so different about Ra's? No lazarus pit, still a terrorist who wants to eradicate the scum off the Earth by extreme means, ninja, league of shadows.

What am I missing?

And yes, that's exactly what's wrong with Iron Man 3. As enjoyable as I found it to be, it completely dropped the ball on these concepts.

1) I didn't read the Iron Man comics.

2) I avoided all IM3 previews.

Not that this bit didn't affect me, but it didn't ruin anything for me.

I thought the twist was a very interesting concept, but they really dropped the ball in giving it any kind of depth or merit and letting it just end up being a forced comedy gimmick.

That bridge fight still didn't make any sense with the leg getting broken off of the armor and none of the deleted scenes answered if that little girl got her leg back or not. They do have stuff with the bully and the kid though.

The agent Carter one shot also entertaining.

Picked up a copy of the 3D version for $21 (Walmart had it for $24 then a $3 Disney Movie Rewards Coupon) Didn't get a chance to watch it this weekend though.
