    New Microsoft Tablet "Surface" discussion

Nobody has a clue on what this major announcement from MSFT is going to be. All kinds of rumors circulating from the Nextbox to an XBL enabled tablet. The announcement is coming at 5:30 CT, so should be interesting to see what they have to say.

Find in-depth gaming news and hands-on reviews of the latest video games, video consoles and accessories.

Rumor and speculation are rampant over what Microsoft's mystery press conference later today is all about, with TechCrunch hanging its hat on a tablet collaboration with Barnes & Noble.

The device would be a tablet, e-reader or mishmash, and be the first device outside of Microsoft to use Xbox Live video streaming. You know... Xbox Live video streaming? That thing you might consider using when Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, HBO GO, Crackle, YouTube and live television aren't available.

Anyway, all will be revealed today at 6:30 Eastern, 3:30 Pacific. Head on over to Engadget this evening for the liveblog.

Update: Or not, according to Barnes & Noble.

Would love for the announcement to live up to the brief hype, but don't think there's much of a chance of that.

Would be happy to be wrong.

Surface is back, in tablet form.

10.6-inch display, 9.3mm thin, full-sized USB 2.0, 680g, magnesium chassis, gorilla glass 2, front and rear cameras, HDMI. Sounds sexy. No way this will be wowing anyone with a low price point.

Sounds awesome so far. But yeah definitely wondering what the price point is.

Looks really slick and well designed. People would be hyperventilating if this was Apple.

Surface for WIndows RT coming in 32GB and 64GB models. Priced "like comparable tablets based on ARM."

Blah. We'll see how all of that ends up shaking out.

I want to hate the keyboard... but I type fine on the iPad so we'll see I guess.

I've never had any interest in tablets before, but this one looks damn intriguing.

That ... does not help. I have no idea what the price range on those are. Wish they would've just told us the price.

I guess the Surface fact sheets were real after all.

Highest price ARM tablet is $399 on Newegg, and you can find Ultrabooks for $1400. Just saying they'll be competitive with each class isn't all that helpful.

Will be interesting to see what people are saying after the hands on, and what prices will end up being if you opt against one of the fancy keyboards for example if that's even an option.

Lots of cool stuff, certainly much more than 'hey, a tablet!' but it all comes down to pricing.

My guess is the RT version will be comparable to the iPad in pricing, while the Pro version is more like an Ultrabook.

No Xbox or Live intergration announcement?

That's what people are asking, but some are suggesting that since it's also/is Windows 8 based or uses it as a platform... every Windows 8 application will run on it... which would include the Xbox integration coming to 8.
