I'm going to start catching up on this season, tonight or tomorrow.

I watched the first three episodes and then it became impossible for me to catch it on Mondays.

I forgot that HIMYM was airing this week, did they show 2 episodes?

Re: How I Met Your Mother: Season 8

So it turns out Season 8 is officially not the end and Season 9 is unofficially the final season.

Not so fast, Ted Mosby. The love of your life is probably another year and a half away...

Deadline is reporting that after intense negotiations between CBS, the show's studio, 20th Century Fox, and the stars, How I Met Your Mother will indeed be returning for Season 9.

It had previously been reported that Jason Segel was the most reluctant to return for another season, and with everyone’s contract up, Deadline says the actor was initially intent on not signing for another year. Creators Craig Thomas and Carter Bays had said they would not continue the show without the entire cast and Deadline says, that being the case, “The show was literally dead” until Segel had a last minute change of heart and agreed to sign for one more year, along with his costars, Josh Radnor, Cobie Smulders, Neil Patrick Harris and Alyson Hannigan, for what Deadline is calling the final season.

Bays and Carter had been quite vocal about the fact that they were at a cutoff point as far as having to know whether this was the final season or not - Given the ongoing storylines of How I Met Your Mother, they needed to know if they were about to go into production on the very last episodes or not, in the latter half of Season 8. Meanwhile, CBS had made it clear they wanted the show to come back, but the key was securing the cast for a new deal. As Deadline notes, CBS was extra keen to close deals on How I Met Your Mother – still a big hit for them – given that they also have to go through contract re-negotiations on Two and a Half Men soon.

As Deadline notes, CBS, 20th Century Fox and the cast are currently keeping quiet on the new deal – likely having intended to announce it next month at the TCA press tour. It remains to be seen if they will indeed say upfront that Season 9 is absolutely the final one, though Carter and Bays had also said in recent interviews that should the show return, it would be for just one additional year.

Though damn, Ted, that is one long *** story you’re telling your kids…

(And yep, this solidly puts any "Maybe Cobie Smulders can jump into S.H.I.E.L.D. next fall" thoughts to rest).
Not quite sure what to think of this yet. On one hand I feel this is a good thing because I think making this the final season half-way through would have been too sudden. On the other hand, I hope this doesn't mean that this gives the writers an excuse to stretch things out longer than they need to be.

I'm also hoping that we (and Ted) finally meet the mother at the end of this season. Anything less I feel would be a complete disappointment.

I feel the same. I'd like it if they showed who the mother was, and left it at that as the cliffhanger (of sorts). Start off next season with Ted explaining more on who she is, how they met, that sort of stuff.

Maybe even go off-track and have an episode explaining how she met Ted (just back-story filler stuff). End the show on Ted's wedding, or the birth of his first kid.

I've pretty much tuned out these past two seasons, watching episodes here and there - but at this point, I just want to see the show finish strong.

Good, now hopefully they reveal the mother at the end of this season to make having another one worth it

If they don't reveal who the mother is at the end of this season, the writers need an intervention.

This is the only ending to this season that I can imagine.

12 episodes left of the season, which starts back NEXT monday(meaning the 14th).

There's an episode on 14th,21st and then 1 week off before having one again on February 4th.

There's about 14 weeks AFTER February 4th, meaning we'll be getting 9 episodes in 14 weeks, which isn't that bad, but looks like we could be getting 1 week off per month.

They have done that a lot, its terrible and hard to follow which shows are new. They need to just take Jan. off and start back up after the superbowl.

TV shows in general need to have better scheduling. I'm guessing the few weeks is cause if something were to happen to prevent the show from airing, they have a few weeks to spare and could just air the show in that week.

But the "winter/spring" schedule is worst. Shows in fall go from mid september to mid december. Shows around this time go from early-mid january all the way till mid-late may.
