I think that's a safe assumption. Would also explain why he's telling all of this to the children.

Re: How I Met Your Mother: Season 8

How'd it be possible? Hasn't a number of narrations from "future ted" basically been lines that were like "if you don't believe me, ask your mother".

But since Jason Segel basically wanted that ending too, would be crazy if it happened. That ending would completely change how I viewed HIMYM for all these years.

Funny that another ending he mentioned was that they're ALL dead(so Ted is basically telling his kids a story literally for rest of their lives)

But 45 days....May 13th! Looks like that is season finale.

Such a chilling, cool episode. Last bit gave me crazy chills. Eerie but really cool.

Not sure exactly why, but I liked it a lot.

My first thought is Ted's speech at the end means he's telling the story of his dead wife, but it's also possible the whole thing about wanting those 45 extra days could just mean he loves her that much and at that time he needed her more than ever.

Either way, very very good ending. Those are the moments that have kept me watching.

              I completely agree.

It's crazy, about 10 minutes in I was thinking that it had the chance to be one of the worst episodes of HIMYM ever and it ended up being maybe one of the best since the episode where Marshall's dad died, IMO.

I don't see how this episode refers to that at all.

The point of it really just seemed to be that Ted was tired of being the only one without a real relationship since all his best friends were already(or getting) married so if he had the chance to, he'd wanted to have met his wife as soon as possible instead of waiting 45 days.

For those saying this is the story of the dead wife....what are the signs that point to it?

Two things I just noticed re-watching last night's episode:

This episode aired on March 25th and they paid homage to the bathroom bit from Dumb and Dumber.

Lewis (the mother's current boyfriend) is Lou Ferrigno's son.

Well the fact that he's crying and that you could interpret him saying he wants those 45 days back because she passed away and that was just more time he missed out on with her.

Really though, there's a number of ways you could take that last scene. Maybe the mother's dead, maybe she's not, maybe these next 45 days are going to be really tough times for Ted and he wishes she was there to help him through it or avoid it altogether, or maybe it does just mean he loves her that much. Who knows?

I was going to add the possibility that maybe Ted is the one who has passed away, but I don't think that works because the kids have interacted with him while he's telling the story at times.

Anyways, I personally don't think they're going to go the dead mother route, but I don't see how you can shoot it down either. Jason Segel has even brought it up as a possibility in the past.

My fiancee was saying "the mom's dead now!" after that final scene, so people here aren't the only ones thinking that.

I was leaning more towards Ted just wanting more time and being tired of wasting time (see the decision with the Coat Check Girl, it'd be 20 months of wasted time), but I can see the death being legit as well.

I would LOVE for that to be the story. I would bawl my ****ing eyes out if that was the case, I don't care.

But as said above, I'm pretty sure Future Ted has said "ask your Mom" on a few occasions so they've kinda painted themselves into a corner in that regard.

I took it as "I'm sick of wasting time and I know I want you, so I wish I met you 45 days before I did"

I wonder if maybe they did decide to use that idea, since it seemed like he wasnt coming back for final season, so maybe something happened that caused him to come back(like they're gonna use his ideas for storylines and stuff to end the series)

Yeah, I took it as he's just hit the wall with being single and literally can't wait for that phase of his life to end...

I've never really been blown away by the dude who plays Ted (reminds me a a second rate version of that guy from Scrubs), but the monologue at the end shows he's got some "drama chops" that may be his savior post HIMYM...

Shows only renewed it's interest for me because I can see "the finish line" in sight and it seems that the whole cast / crew / writers are steppin it up to finish on a high note...

                            Good stuff (again)...

I think it's more likely he wanted to finish out strong personally. I guess he figured he's been on this show for 8-9 years already, what's 1 more year going to hurt? And after hearing that Jason Segel said the dead wife is a possibility, I'm pretty sure the wife isn't dead after all. Actors typically like to throw the audience in a loop to keep them guessing/watching.

And now that it's been brought up, I think I do recall a time or 2 when Future Ted said something along the lines of "ask your mother ".

Also, (general question, not calling anyone out) it seems that some people were trying to rush things along this season, didn't like the episode if it didn't bring us 2 steps closer to knowing who the mother is. Why? This show has an ensemble cast and I saw really good character development from everyone this entire series.

There was also the episode where Ted, Marshall, and Lily are at a reunion in the future, and Ted says "where's my wife?", implying that they are still together at that point. I seriously doubt that the wife is dead. I think he wanted those 45 days because he has been waiting for so long (8 years now) for her, and he just wants all that much more time with her.

I think it is very safe to say he will, in fact, meet her at the wedding. But, she will have a boyfriend, so they will not be able to get together right away. He'll spend next season pursuing her.
