The finale(at least the part involving the kids) has already been shot, so sounds more like if the finale was something like the mother dying, it would have been the plan all along.

I love that this season has been as great as the first few were. The last episode was as emotional as the episode where Marshall's dad passed away.

I wouldn't say that....at least not yet, but I did forget to mention that I think this season has picked up pretty nicely after the first few episodes. I don't know if it's a coincidence that it's seemed to have happened after they made it official that next season is the last.

It's not nearly as great as the first few and I don't think episode was as emotional, but this season has been noticeably better than the last couple and the last episode was really damn good.

So I guess this episode all but confirmed that we will meet the mother this season, right? Ted said something like they will meet in 45 days which would be just about the season finale
And I don't think that the wife dies. In the beginning of the series, when narrator Ted is telling his kids the story, the son goes, "is this going to take a while?". Doesn't seem like something someone would say as their dad recounts the story of their dead mother.
Also, as someone else mentioned, in the high school reunion however many years in the future, Ted says "where's my wife?" towards the end.
I think the explanation for Ted crying is that he is just a really emotional character. He has always talked about how badly he wants to settle down and the fact that it is so close is the reason for the tears.

But wait... In a later episode where they ran into Rachel Bilsons character at Maclarens, didn't her roommate show up and it turned out they were lesbians and eventually got married?
Edit: nevermind. The girl that Rachel Bilson got married to wasn't her roommate.

So there is one side no one has mentioned yet, Maybe Ted is dead? This could be a video he made for his kids. Its always been them sitting on a sofa looking at where a logical place for a TV would be.

That would have been an amazing plot idea, but as stated above, the kids have interacted with him before.
