I'm way late to this party but outside of the films, what are some other good things to watch/read that deal with the main SW canon or lore?

Well with the secrecy around the Disney movies they seem to be phasing out the novels that take place after Return of the Jedi, or at least they are in limbo right now. But any of the novels that take place before Jedi are good ones to read. A recent release titled Kenobi was really good. It takes place shortly after Episode III, and focuses on Obi-wan and his new life of exile on Tatooine and his inner struggle with his last battle against Anakin. Another recent novel called Scoundrels was fun. It was an Ocean's 11 type story featuring Solo, Lando, and Chewie. A book from a couple years ago titled Plagueis was interesting. It's the origin story of the Emperor. The newest books are a three book series focused on Leia, Solo, and Luke set during the Rebellion time. The Luke one isn't out yet and I haven't read the Solo one, but the Leia one, Razors Edge, was pretty good. I could go on and on about the Star Wars novels, I've read over 150+ of them.

          Here's a timeline of the books: http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Timeline_of_books

Netflix streaming just got the 6 seasons of The Clone Wars which are good if you don't mind animation. Read online to get the proper episode order for the best way to watch.

I had hoped Shadows of the Empire would be made into a movie.
It's a book about the events that transpired between The Empire Strikes Back and Return Of The Jedi.

So, for everyone hoping that they'd turn one of their favorite novels or comics or whatever (from the Expanded Universe) into this new trilogy, and the spin-offs, well...stop.

New "Star Wars" movies will (kind of) ignore the Expanded Universe.

              Basically:

Grand Admiral Thrawn, the Sun Crusher, the moral descent of Jacen Solo, the spacefaring Dirty Dozen known as Wraith Squadron, the clones of Emperor Palpatine, Mara Jade: All these and more will almost certainly not appear in the upcoming Star Wars sequel trilogy, or the spinoff series Star Wars Rebels, or indeed any future iteration of Star Wars-related content. As revealed in what is quite possibly the nerdiest press release in the history of publicity, Lucasfilm is inaugurating a new era in the galaxy far, far away.

“The company for the first time ever has formed a story group to oversee and coordinate all Star Wars creative development,” the press release explains. “In order to give maximum creative freedom to the filmmakers and also preserve an element of surprise and discovery for the audience, Star Wars Episodes VII-IX will not tell the same story told in the post-Return of the Jedi Expanded Universe.”

At least we now know that everything forthcoming will be canon. It'll be interesting to see how this comic book industry style working of things goes. It could lead to the SW universe feeling very cookie cutter or it could bring about interesting stories that we know for sure mean something.

                Time will tell I guess.

It's all fine with me. I don't really want to see any of the current stories out there even if they are good just cause I know some of them.

Plus if they want to make it this whole big outside of just one last trilogy then it makes sense

Not sure if any of you watched The Clone Wars and now Rebels on Disney XD, but the season 2 trailer for Rebels season 2 starting next week came out yesterday, it's really good:

I really like the show, liked The Clone Wars too. This is from a huge Star Wars fan but not a big fan of many animated kid Pixar/Disney type movies. So I'm sure it is the Star Wars geek in me that has me into these shows.
