Killed by the Gold Cloaks after Eddard was seized in the throne room, following Roberts death.

It was never shown though. Just implied that one of the kingsguard killed him.

I agree that it was meh, until the end.

Thought it was a very "we are booked for 10 episodes, so we better fill 10 hours worth of time" episode. Didn't really progress the story much IMO. The scene between Cersei and Oberynn, I really didn't get that. The only really interesting events happened in the Eyrie giving the history of the bloody gate, and Lysa showing she is still bat **** crazy.

The Eyrie part was great. Awesome to see a storyline come full circle from episode 1. Dany is kinda pissing me off, let's do something this season please.

Glad we can maybe turn our attention up north to the potential war coming. The Hound is the ****

I think they showed the Cersei scene with Oberynn because she is trying to curry favor with the judges in Tyrion's trial. Even tried it with her own father.

That's right, it was never confirmed and Arya never saw it. I thought it was implied that he had a chance of getting away.

The ending was cool I guess, but it was a dumb fight scene. Jon Snow has one of the only valyrian steel swords left, and valyrian steel is supposed to be a LOT better than regular swords, but you're telling me he can't kill a dude with 2 knives? Not to mention the blocking the valyrian sword with them. That was ridiculious. The fight choreographing in this show is so inconsistent. You'll have a great fight, then one like tonight that was dumb.

I thought it would be along those lines but I felt it missed the mark. Especially since Tywin basically did the same thing last week and was much more overt about it in a much better scene IMO.

Well, Cersei is more of a snake than Tyrion and she used the absence of her daughter to play upon Oberynn's sympathies.

I think the scene was used to show Jon isn't among the show's top tier in sword fighting. In the past he's shown to be very skilled but it's mostly because he does have training and he's either fighting against completely untrained novices with no experience at Castle Black or untrained Wildlings. A reality check of sorts.

Yup, the whole thing was that he didn't know how to really fight since he's not from the "streets" as described by some of the lines, being tripped up, and spit in the face.

That theme wasn't just limited to Jon either in this episode, The Hound was trying to tell Arya similar things.

So will this be a turning point for Jon, will he become a better swordsman as the show progresses?

Answer in spoilers if need be, I really like the character

Oberyn is one of the judges in Tyrion's trial. She's trying to manipulate him. That was her role last night. I actually enjoyed last night's episode.
