AFAIK he was never mirandized so all this is just an informal interview. I think the new detectives like Rust as a suspect, I think we will find out Rust ends up washing out as a cop after this case, making him suspect. I mean, from their perspective they have a guy central to solving the old case, who is bat**** weird, who washes out and ends up drunk living behind a bar, and now they see a very similar murder pop up. He has to be a suspect.

I still firmly believe this is tied to the Governor's cousin (brother-in-law?). Now that we know about the cult, wouldn't surprise me if he's the leader. If either of the two are part of this thing, IMO it's Hart, his life is currently in a tailspin yet somehow he comes out the exact opposite of Rust. I wouldn't be shocked to find out Rust's place is the manic obsessed detective trope of clippings and pictures all connected by string, himself never able to let the case go and never believed it was truly solved.

Rewatching the last episode, there were some subtle hints that makes you wonder if he's telling the truth to WH about his past. One example was when MM talked about being undercover or something along those lines for 4 years and WH remarks saying that's unusual, usually guys are assigned for 11 months. I've been picking up on little things like this as I've been Rewatching episodes.

I know for sure it will be interesting to rewatch the season once we find out the real story. But for anyone looked for an excuse to rewatch the first 4 episodes, try watching it with the assumption that MM is the killer.
I've been reading some theories about the purpose of the present day investigation and I've seen people say that if they are going the "one of the cops was the real killer" route that it would actually be Woody's character.

If it's either Woody or Cohle I will be disappointed. But yeah, Woody would be more of a misdirection so I could see that happening.

I disagree, he cannot be a suspect for one reason, if he was they wouldn't have allowed him to drink beer while they spoke with him, it'd make anything he said inadmissible...

Not only Beer, but I think I saw him tugging on a flask too. That's a good point, he has had 6 tall boys and an undisclosed amount of liquor, not sure anything he says would be admissible evidence. Most likely he's just been withdrawn for years living in the back of a bar and working at the bar. Probably never leaves that location.

Hart on the other hand, looks a little more like an interrogation. He's seemed a little nervous at some points and the camera is recording everything he's saying.

Exactly what I was thinking... I'm sure they ruled Matt M.s character out and thus why he's being questioned and allowed to drink as he wants, they figure he must know something but he's not the prime suspect...OR he knows something and he doesn't even know he knows it and thus why they want him relaxed and willing to talk freely..

I don't see Hart as whack job crazy though. Crazy, sure. Crazy enough to explode and kill somebody, sure. Crazy enough to make a satanic ritual out of it? Nope. I suppose they could go the storyline that he killed somebody out of rage and used the killer's M.O. to cover it up; but that would be a terrible way to get suspicion off himself. He has to know if he would be brought in for questioning in this situation.

Cohle on ther other hand, yes, whack job crazy. With some of speeches and rants about life he seems absolutely nuts. I think that would be too obvious though. I would feel let down by the show if he was killer.

It's inadmissible because he was never mirandized in the first place. It's not an uncommon tactic, get someone in for an informal interview, fish for information that can lead to something of value.

They are recording Rust's interview as well.

Re: New HBO Series True Detective (McConaughey and Harrelson)

I don't see either Rust or Marty as your psychopathic killer type.

Marty has anger-management/temper issues for sure, and he's a bit of a self-centered prick who thinks too highly of himself.

Rust is a total pessimist, and comes off as quite 'out there'; the loss of his child and subsequent destruction of his marriage totally changed his outlook on life, and has made him a cold and somewhat callous person who doesn't have much to live for.

They both display very human qualities, though, and aren't so indifferent to the lives of the people around them to come off as insane serial killers.

It's just one man's opinion, of course, but I just don't see the writing taking this story in that direction whatsoever. The show is too smart and has too much going for it, I'd be surprised and disappointed if it went that route.

I don't doubt that there will be some revelation/conclusion at the end that is more than what is expected, especially given the likelihood of some type of sacrificial (satanic?) cult being linked to the murders, but that's also already being hinted at.

Regardless, I'm really loving this show, in every aspect of it. I'm kinda sad that things are gonna totally change for the next season; the chemistry between McConaughey and Harrelson has been so awesome, along with the rest of the acting/writing/directing in general.

Agree with everything else you said, but I like the True Detective format, where different actors, stories and characters appear each season. Besides, you probably couldn't have signed Harrelson and McConaughey for more than one season.

Just a theory on who is involved but ill use spoiler tags anyway because the clue is accurate. Idk if this clue points to the real killer but it is a clue so don't click if you want to discover it on the show

Good theory. Another, more complete one was posted on the message boards over at STLToday by a guy that goes by Ronnie Dobbs. I am gonna quote it here, with spoiler tags. Be warned: if this is accurate it describes everything going on. And it sounds plausible at least. It also references a real-life case in Louisiana, for which I provided a link.

My thoughts exactly. I've never understood people that spend hours trying to figure things out beforehand. Its so much more fun just to watch and absorb it as it comes and right now I have no clue what to expect next episode and love every minute of the anticipation for next week.

And for those who feel the need to post every theory that can think of or read online on this thread, please keep using spoiler tags for the sake of the rest of us who don't wanna read it.

What an episode. After every one I go on ign and read the review.. They do a good job of summing things up and giving good perspective

Ps I read the theory posted by quint and wish I didn't. Thinking it was impossible for someone to guess what is going to happen I clicked on the spoiler to read it and that's probably exactly what's going to happen. A lot of stuff really makes sense now after reading it but man I wish I didn't. Readers beware.
